Hi Semolina,

Would you be willing to coordinate the domain name selection process and
acquire the domain if necessary.

I've listed the domain names that have been proposed so far. ISTM that
selection of a domain name will take few days.

By that time we should know if a new name will be *needed*.

This is a summary of the information posted to date regarding selection
of the new web site.
We will need a site with roughly 15 MB of space and PHP support - as a
minimum. (If ACF decides to have a PL2005 CD and wants to host an ISO of
the CD on the web site we will require a great deal more.)

-----------

note: this was posted in another thread

From: Matt <[email protected]>

http://i-websolutions.co.uk/cfhosting.php
There are some web packages in association with a forum I'm a member
of (open to anyone).
If 100Mb of space, and 2Gb of bandwith are enough (and 5 MYSQL
databases), the forum members price is just 99p a month.

---------------

From: dszady <[email protected]>

A university ftp site for the ISO would be perfect. Might cut down on
costs. Need to know this years traffic.

--------------

From: Susan Bugher <[email protected]>

In April Amir Malik sent me some data on the PL2004 ISO he's hosting

over a 5 day period (April 14-18):
Average data transferred per day: 52.88 gigabytes

I don't know if Steven Burns got any data from our ACF site before it
went down.

--------------

From: "Steven Burn" <[email protected]>

According to my host, it was using just over 250GB (average) per day

--------------

From: burnr <[email protected]>

Pricing ranges from ~$50.00 - $100.00US per yr. but I imagine to the
higher side or more if a 600mb file like the ISO is hosted for download
due to the bandwidth.

If nothing better becomes available, I could host a mirror as a sub-
domain (http://pricelessware.freeware4u.com) as long as a database is
not needed.

http://www.doteasy.com Ultra hosting pk. 7.95/yr. php/mysql 1000mb
storage and 20gb/month bandwidth. They offer domain reg. for $20.00/yr.

There's likely better deals than this, but this can be used as a
reference. DotEasy is a good, reliable host.

-----------------

From: PerthMETRO.net <email -at- perthmetro -dot- net>

Transfer Fee Domain names not registered through the Doteasy service are
subject to a waivable one-time $35.00 fee.

How to Waive the Transfer Fee?

* Refer or sign up two new Doteasy accounts within 30 days of this
account application (New or transfer hosting accounts are acceptable).

Sorry for the last bit... this is the correct details... essentially it
will cost $35

Try this one instead...

There have been quite a few threads about hosting in ACF - I'll see what
I can dig out.

Meanwhile, anyone who has comments, useful information, a web site to
offer etc. please post.

It was taken around the same time as Genna took the .org variety. The
..com and another (I forget) were also taken, all by a guy in Canada.
Perhaps he is simply biding his time for a recent event such as this?!!

Just one quick comment. I do not want to own or co-own the domain name. AFAIK
there is no need for that. Some *other* volunteer(s) should own the domain
name.

As far as I understand your comment, you agree with the rest of my
syggestion? If yes, who then do you ask somebody else to take action in
achieving another domain name? If not, why didn't you say so?

I think I'm getting sick and tired of this 'kind of play'. Except for
the updates of my own site, I'll be in <lurk>-mode for some (I think a
long) time.

250 gb per day? Jeez.

I'd have to think that the project was pretty successful. That's quite
a bit of bandwidth.

Maybe a Win P2P program like WinMX will assist. There are many times I
could make this single file available. I'm sure many could, which
would spread the demand over many points.

Hi Semolina,

acquire the domain if necessary.

Yes, I'll do that. We're advised that PricelessWare.net is not
available, so I've amended the lists below.

I don't think acf.pricelessware.org can be used unless the site is a sub-
domain of the current site. The dot would need to be a - or _
acf-pricelessware.org
acf_pricelessware.org
or
pricelessware-acf.org

Tis true ;o)

pricelessware.org is a "top level" (parent) domain, and
acf.pricelessware.org wouldn't be allowed as it would be a "second level"
(sub/child) domain of it's parent.

I don't have bandwidth useage information. Perhaps SOS could give us the
figures.

I found an estimator at http://findmyhosting.com/

3000 visitors per month -> 1.2 GB
10000 visitors per month -> 4 GB

http://www.findmyhosting.com/searchresults.asp?page=1&op=1&ty=8&sid=684429

The above web page has PHP / MySQL Web Hosting plans - I haven't looked
at them in detail yet.

Two inexpensive plans mentioned favorably in this thread and/or other
ACF posts.

An $8 per year plan at the http://www.jv-hosting.net It allows only 1 GB
of bandwidth. I suspect that is not enough.

http://www.discount-hosting.com/ offers only one plan. Some of the details:

US$10 annual fees
one month free trial
You MUST have an existing, correctly configured and useable domain name
to subscribe.
No bandwith overload (5 Gb / month maximum)

- 50 Mb disk space
- No additional setup fees
- No unwanted banner or commercial
- Unlimited FTP account
- Unlimited e-mail alias forwarding
- Catch-all alias
- Full featured PHP4 with GD, XML, ftp and more
- MySQL/PhpMyAdmin

http://www.discount-hosting.com/faq.html

How do I subscribe ?

2 steps :
1) You create your customer ID. This is necessary to subscribe one or
several plan(s).
An authentication login / password for your customer ID will be
recorded. These data are at your choice, be sure to keep them in a
secure place. To proceed, just follow instructions on the interface.

2) You order your plan by typing the domain name you wish to install.
The form will check wether the DNS's are correct. If so, you complete
the process and on the next business day, you will receive at the client
ID provided e-mail address a confirmation mail showing the FTP address,
login and password for uploading your discount-hosting server.
If you are satisfied with discount-hosting service, feel free to pay
your US$10 annual fees. Of course, you have one whole month to do so.

Can I use e-mail addresses using the domain name installed on my
discount-hosting plan ?

Of course. Your discount-hosting.com plan comes with unlimited e-mail
addresses feature like : (e-mail address removed)
(e-mail address removed) and so on. The point is that no e-mail
account is hosted on the server : you must redirect every address to
your usual POP acount(s), e. g. the one(s) given by your ISP. Of course,
should you change your ISP (thus your POP account(s) ID('s)), you can
change the redirection at any time with your discount-hosting e-mail
manager.

How do I configure your DNS on my existing domain name ?

Almost every registrar allows you to change manually primary and
secondary DNS on your domain name record.
If you do not know who is your registrar, please feel free to use the
whois utility available on the site : http://www.discount-hosting.com.
When the record is displayed, just look up at the top area : you will
find your registrar's info, including its web site URL : just type this
URL on your browser and look for a link called like : 'domain manager',
'manage your account' or something approaching this meaning.
Once on the interface, just type on the proper fields the name and IP
address of the primary, then secondary and finnaly the tertiary
discount-hosting DNS servers :

An other aspect of the whole issue is that I would regret that we loose
the Pricelessware domain name. This name is well known in the whole
Internet, and I have seen numerous sites that link to
www.pricelessware.org/. Switching to another name doesn't do any good.

You obviously haven't read all of the 300+ previous posts. A simple
solution has already been offered. A link to the new site from the old
one.

This is hardly "rocket science".
I also don't know what Genna and/or SOS are planning to do with the
currect pricelessware domain, when the PL-files are moved elsewhere.

I expect they will do what they did before Susan turned up. Host the
PL list. There is nothing stopping us having multiple versions done by
multiple people in multiple formats.

Unless one asks the mega controllers. They want total control over
everything.
When both Genna and/or SOS have no plans with the domain, I would
suggest that we kindly ask them to hand over that domain to Susan and
an other member of ACF. When they are willing to do so, I think it
would be fair that they also receive the money they already paid for
this domain.

< snip >

Yep. Susan can pay Genna whatever money she asks for and then Susan
can do things "her way" with "absolute control" over everything. As
she wants. No need for compromise that way. She then also doesn't need
to co-operate with anyone else.

Regards, John.

I like .org myself, as this is an organization of volunteers.

The American Chestnut Foundation has acf.org :(

acfware.org is available.

Any other suggestions?
There is an American Chestnut Foundation???!!!
