Proposed Pricelessware web site

The decision is so far is in favor of a move.

There are unanswered questions. There are plans to be made.

Questions about use of the pricelessware.org domain name should be
referred to the owner of the name - SOS or Genna. (If the
pricelessware.org domain name is not available another domain name will
need to be chosen and obtained.)

Questions about use of some of the PL archives - PL2002 and earlier web
pages - should be referred to Genna (the creator of those pages).

We will need a site with roughly 15 MB of space and PHP support - as a
minimum. (If ACF decides to have a PL2005 CD and wants to host an ISO of
the CD on the web site we will require a great deal more.)

Anyone who wishes to host the site (or a mirror site) - please post with
relevant information about the site.

What are the best inezpensive web hosts? If anyone has information/
recommendations please post that information.

As a *minumum* a second active participant in ACF is needed to help with
the site. That person should have access to the site and the database
files - IOW - access to everything needed to take over *temporarily* in
the event of an emergency - until the crisis is over or until other
arrangements can be made.

<for future discussion>

I say *temporarily* in the hope that someone will happily volunteer on
that basis. ATM few people in ACF are willing to take on the job of
webmaster. ISTM that it is both possible and necessary to make the job
less demanding.

</for future discussion>

Let's get the possibilities and the questions out on the table and
discuss them.

Here:

and i am sure there are others for around $5 a month that'll suit your
needs.

as for "piggybacking" on someone elses webspace and bandwidth ? not a good
idea. just look at what happened this last time. at least when you have
your own host (like the link I sent you) you'll have total control no matter
what and you can dictate turns which is what you wanted all along, correct ?

now, can we stop this foolishness and get back to freeware ?

Sorry, that should be "terms" not turns. It's hard to type with a 3 year
old on your lap who wants to type too.)

Henk, get out the people skills. :)

pricelessware.info is taken
pricelessware.us is not (a little sticky in a world-wide forum)
Questions about use of some of the PL archives - PL2002 and earlier web

I don't think we need those pages for obvious reasons IMO
We will need a site with roughly 15 MB of space and PHP support - as a

A university ftp site for the ISO would be perfect. Might cut down on
costs. Need to know this years traffic.
If not, I'll take New England and the Maritimes.

Another domain name is not needed. You are free to purchase a domain
name however if you want to.

If the current name is unavailable, suggest acf-pricelessware.com or
variant of.

Questions about use of some of the PL archives - PL2002 and earlier web
pages - should be referred to Genna (the creator of those pages).

IMO would be preferrred to include for continuity and historical value.
We will need a site with roughly 15 MB of space and PHP support - as a

the CD on the web site we will require a great deal more.)

Pricing ranges from ~$50.00 - $100.00US per yr. but I imagine to the
higher side or more if a 600mb file like the ISO is hosted for download
due to the bandwidth.
Anyone who wishes to host the site (or a mirror site) - please post with
relevant information about the site.

If nothing better becomes available, I could host a mirror as a sub-
domain (http://pricelessware.freeware4u.com) as long as a database is not
needed.

What are the best inezpensive web hosts? If anyone has information/
recommendations please post that information.

http://www.doteasy.com Ultra hosting pk. 7.95/yr. php/mysql 1000mb
storage and 20gb/month bandwidth. They offer domain reg. for $20.00/yr.

There's likely better deals than this, but this can be used as a
reference. DotEasy is a good, reliable host.

As a *minumum* a second active participant in ACF is needed to help with
the site. That person should have access to the site and the database

I'd be willing to help in anyway you need.

The decision is so far is in favor of a move.

I don't know if this is a right decision, but I think that this can be
a way out of the troubles we had.

When the PL-site is actually moved to another place, I hope that we all
keep in mind that Genna and SOS started the Pricelessware pages some
years ago, and that they deserve our credits and thanks for the time
and efforts (and money) they spent on these pages.

An other aspect of the whole issue is that I would regret that we loose
the Pricelessware domain name. This name is well known in the whole
Internet, and I have seen numerous sites that link to
www.pricelessware.org/. Switching to another name doesn't do any good.
I also don't know what Genna and/or SOS are planning to do with the
currect pricelessware domain, when the PL-files are moved elsewhere.

When both Genna and/or SOS have no plans with the domain, I would
suggest that we kindly ask them to hand over that domain to Susan and
an other member of ACF. When they are willing to do so, I think it
would be fair that they also receive the money they already paid for
this domain. After that Susan and an other member of ACF are
responsible for the PL-pages. And looking at the work Susan has already
done in the past year for those pages, I think that those pages are in
good hands.

Any comments/suggestions?

With kind regards,

Just one quick comment. I do not want to own or co-own the domain name.
AFAIK there is no need for that. Some *other* volunteer(s) should own
the domain name.

In April Amir Malik sent me some data on the PL2004 ISO he's hosting

over a 5 day period (April 14-18):
Average data transferred per day: 52.88 gigabytes

I don't know if Steven Burns got any data from our ACF site before it
went down.

I will chip in for whatever the cost is. A site collectively owned by
ACF participants would seem to cut off any future problems I hope.

If Geena and SOS continue the current site I suggest mutual links and
another freeware site, such as ACF*, be started. The dust will
eventually settle and I'm sure there will be a decision at some point.
It's probably impossible currently to make such a decision.

I don't think it right to ask or expect the domain to be turned over.

The main point is that either or both sites have the backing of the
members here. I think the support is present, however this plays out.

The quicker the better. Is anyone else interersted in chipping in for
a member owned domain? The amount is unimportant. What is important is
that it be member owned in my opinion, by as many participants as is
possible.

Yes, if that's the way the group wants to go.

According to my host, it was using just over 250GB (average) per day

I suppose suggestions of a domain name would be good to include as the
thread goes.

I like .org myself, as this is an organization of volunteers.

The American Chestnut Foundation has acf.org :(

acfware.org is available.

Any other suggestions?
