To be honest, I started this as a bit of light relief from
the recent arguments. I'm not sure if I can offer the same
devotion to a site that previous people have managed!

Well, it doesn't matter, right :) Actually a site of constant
update is of course good, but it is also nice to have a very
simple site just to report the result sof the orginal (the
orginal version and the orginal link). If that is the case,
all the users need to know perhaps is that the freeware status
of some ware and sites can change and if they want the most
latest information or new links, one can always point them to
either the existing PL site or Susan upcoming PL site or to
both :) Just my 2 cents

Hey, cool. Thanks Susan, that's saved me no end of time :)

All seems OK - I'll tidy up and tweak to my own liking later. You really
are being very good about this blatant 'steal' ;-)

happy to oblige :)

I realized after I posted that (for now) you will have to change the
file name and the URL on the Program Index page - or any other PHP page
- from .php to .htm - the sorting won'r work but the page should be okay
otherwise.

Haven't thought of any other snags so far. . .

Hi, Susan, just want to say thank you for helping on this (so
we can see one more site promoting freeware :-D). And of
cause I also want to say thanks for the great job you have
done for the site and for everyone here :) No matter what
had happened, I personally really appriciated what your work
and want to say thank you once again (I know I know... you get
that a lot ;oP ).

It's *always* nice to hear ;) *especially* from someone who's given a
lot of her time as an ACF volunteer.

I've been reading your posts - lots of good points there - I'd join in
the discussion but too many other things to do - not enough hours in the
day. . . :(

embarrassing ...}...have been really lurking for a while
but I guess I will never leave this group, though; perhaps on
and off lurking and then come back and lurk again said:

thank you, I did not post much in the beginning because I just
think sometimes problems need to got sink in to me first, just
for the brian to process them - didn't want to join the
discussions hastily.

Same here, life can just get busy. But in a way I think it
can be a good thing, I sometimes think I spent way too much
time in front of the screen (almost got addicted), it is good
to be forced to have a break sometimes :)

both good. . . I like having acf in the name. . .

Well fair enough, but the problem with acronyms is that they tend to
be defined differently from time to time and place to place. ACF, for
example, has been the Australian Conservation Foundation to many
people for at least three decades.
I vote for pricelessware-acf.org

You know, I find this whole business like something out of "Alice in
Wonderland" or a Monty Python skit.

USENET as a whole is simply one glorious anarchy, and alt.* was
created as an even more extreme form -- and now people here are
"voting" and acting as if things can be "controlled"! ROTFLOL

Mind you, I've nothing against the idea of discussion, concensus and
cooperation; but it really is rather amusing to find so much formality
evolving in an "alt" newsgroup. Next you'll have a constitution!

Diverging, as one who came in late, I'm still wondering why freeware
is left wandering in the wilderness of alt.comp.* rather than in the
more intentionally formal comp.* hierarchy? There is a real downside
to alt.* in that many organisations (especially in the .gov and .com
worlds) do not allow access to the alt.* groups. But perhaps all such
issues were canvassed here in the past?

Cheers, Phred.

I don't know why the original proponent(s) did not try to create a
group in comp.* instead; I wish they had. I suspect that it was
only because it is so much easier to newgroup in alt.* or because
the people involved were already using alt.comp.shareware. FWIW,
the thread in alt.config starts here:

<http://groups.google.com/[email protected]>

When the newgroup was issued, it included binaries in the group
discription (as well as misspelling 'freeware'), and it was
immediately rmgrouped. It propagated anyway, and here we are.

both good. . . I like having acf in the name. . .

I vote for pricelessware-acf.org

The domain name acf-pricelesswarelist.org has been acquired.

It has become impossible to continue the domain name vote for the
moment. Several of the suggested names have become unavailable within
the past few days. Indeed, it seems that in some cases they were no
sooner suggested here than they were snapped up.

The webmaster will be Susan Bugher and the backup webmaster will be
Burnr.

The domain name and site will be held in trust for a.c.f.

This is a *temporary* setup. After the site is up and going
discussions about the long term arrangements can begin.

arrangements needed? Just curious.

Thanks for that pointer, ISO. Interesting thread -- and the last
couple of contributions may be confirming my point about distribution
right from the beginning. (Probably why I missed it all then too, we
had moved on to a more "controlled" environment by 1995 where alt.*
was banned.)

I wonder if the present desire of many here to "vote" for something
couldn't be usefully channeled into a move to formalise the group as
one of the "Big 8", namely as comp.software.freeware? If successful,
that would make distribution of the group's collected wisdom and
advice more widely available to needy users.

Cheers, Phred.

No doubt by a cabal of power-mad reactionaries bent on subjugating the
will of the a.c.f. Freedom Fighters.

I think there are a number of issues that should be explored. First,
both domain and site should be jointly owned by as many people as
possible, to help ensure its future for the group. I spoke of the
site and domain being "held in trust for the group" and that would be
the best way to go. That's easily said, of course, but the legal
method by which such a thing can be done and the ramifications of
doing it need to be explored. Certainly, I don't know the answers,
but together we may be able to come to an arrangement that will be
satisfactory to all.

That's us.We really should be reported to the proper authorities.

When the room stops spinning, give Semolina a break.

He simply announced the new site. He's a fantastic fellow.

It is time to mend fences and to focus on the topic that brings us all
here.

Another illusion gone. I always thought Semolina was a female name -- and
with the surname Pilchard denoting piscatorial connections possibly with a
mermaid's tail. <g>

Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Alan Poe.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen.

And just to keep this on topic ;) here's a Beatles freeware media player,
which I know nothing about...
