windows installer starts when right-click desktop icon

I have XP. When I right-click some (but not all) desktop icons, the windows
installer "preparing to install" dialog box comes up. The only way out is to
cancel it. After cancelling the appropriate right-click side menu comes up.

Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

It just started a couple of days ago. I also noticed that a couple of times
it happened when I left-clicked the Word icon on start menu, but that sees OK
now.

Thanks.

Does it give an indication of what it's trying to install?

Yes, it looks like it's trying to install Adobe's (formerly Macromedia)
Contribute 3, which I do have on this computer.
