desktop icons

after years of being able to click and drag icons on the desktop they now all
line up in columns on the left side of my desktop.
I have checked the options by right clicking on the desktop but no matter
what options I choose it does not seem to change the actions I take to move
icons from the left to any position on the desktop.
Any help would be appreciated.

So you've de-selected "Auto Arrange" and "Align to Grid" ? If so,
then you cannot reposition the icons to your preferred location ?
