IE6 crashes when opening favorites

L

larry

I installed IE6 and when I open some (not every) pages using the Favorites
list I get the blue screen:
A fatal exception 0E at 0028:C02807E8 in VXD VMM(06) + 000047E8.
Applicaition terminated.

I did not have this problem with IE5 so I uninstalled IE6 but now IE5 was
showing the same behaviour. So I re-installed IE6 and would like to solve
this. I don't have this problem with Netscape.

The pages open fine as long as I don't use the favorites link: I can cpy the
URL from the properties and paste it for example.

This is one of those links that crash:

Any suggestions? I already ran deltree on \Windows\profiles\<me>\favourites
before installing IE6 this last time.

Thanks.

Update your video and modem drivers.

Install the latest IE cumulative patch for protection against QHost:

I downloaded the patch. I don't think I have QHost since I didn't find the
traces in the registry.

I removed the modem driver since I'm not using it anyway. I updated the
video drive, which is the same version as the original but it got
reinstalled anyway. I also reinstalled the nic driver for the cable modem.

Nothing changed. I still have the blue screen problem with IE6.

What next?

Let's rule out video issues. Go to Control Panel, Display, Settings,
Advanced, Performance. Reduce hardware acceleration a notch at a time and
test to see if things improve.

Windows 9x?

Check explorer.exe, shell32.dll, and shdocvw.dll. Are they all the same
versions and dates or close? Do you have active desktop installed?

Done. One step. Which puts it at none. The first time I tried a problem site
it opened, but another didn't and I got the blue screen and, after
restarting IE, neither did the first site anymore. So I pushed the
acceleration back to max (not sure why i t wasn't ther before).

Also see reply to Daniel's post.

Only if selected from the favorites menu?

What happens if you create a new favorite and use it?

Only if selected from the favourites do I get the problem. I can read the
properties of a link, copy and paste it, and everything works fine.
I visited the following page, deleted the link and setup the bookmark
again -- twice, in two quite different places:blush:ne at root level and one
nested in two directories. Both links were created fine. Using either link
caused the blue screen.

Not all links cause this problem but if a link causes the problem it seems
to always cause the problem. At time the creation of a link causes the blue
screen; interestingly, the link is usually created anyway.

Are the file versions I listed in my last post the current ones? If not,
where would I get the current ones?

Thanks.

The shell32.dll you're running is from:

Q313829 Unchecked Buffer in Windows Shell Could Lead to Code Running
which is available from:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/security/q313829/default.asp

I'm unable to place your explorer.exe. I'm doing a search right now on a
drop folder to see if I can find it.

I suspected a shell32/explorer mismatch at first. Looking the the
versions, they appear *okay*, but I'm not 100% sure.

Favorites are stored in a hashed container controlled by the index.dat
file.

One thing you *could* try:

1. Clear out all the cache with Tools | Internet Options Delete Files
button.

Did you try that already? Does it solve the problem?

if not,

2. Do File, Import and Export, and export your favorites to bookmark.htm.
How does that work if you run bookmark.htm locally? Can you access them
that way?

Tried it just now. No change.

Clicking the links on the exported file works fine, either opening in the
same window or in new window.
