IE6 crashes when loading Faovrites menu

I'm running latest version of IE6 post-SP2, with all MS security updates
installed. Recently, browser crashes ("Internet Explorer has encountered a
problem....") whenever attempting to open the Favorites menu. Importing a
different favorites file makes no difference. I could not find a way to
unload IE6, but I attempted to reload IE6 anyway using the MS download file
'ie6setup.exe'. However, this failed since the setup program recognized a
later version of IE already installed. Anyone know what's wrong, and how to
fix this? Is there a way to uninstall IE6?

Hi Keith :)

You can not uninstall IE in XP, as it is a core part of the operating
system, and removal of any IE files could seriously damage the system.

Here are proper instructions to repair IE in XP:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/EN-US/
Be sure to visit Windows Update site and let it scan for all needed updates
and service packs afterward.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks a lot for the helpful advice. I was going to use the MS website to
repair/reinstall SP2 but thought to try using an earlier restore point to get
back to a functional IE configuration. This worked eventually (had to repeat
more than once), but still don't know what happened or why.

Again, thanks for the prompt and helpful/correct reply.

Okay, I finally found a fix for the problem.

Using information found in article KB318378 under the heading "Windows XP
and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet Explorer 6", (Even
though I have SP2), I edited the registry to allow me to reinstall IE 6.

After doing this IT STILL told me the same thing as before, "Setup has
encountered a newer version of Internet Explorer on this system. Setup cannot
continue. I rebooted and a message was displayed that read something like,
"IE has been removed from your system, would you like to clean up personal
settings?"

At first I resisted as I didn't want to loose these, but I could still not
reinstall IE. So I rebooted again and this time I choose "Yes" to delete my
personal settings.

At this point I opened IE and attempted to access the Favorite menu and
"Save" a new Favorite and all is well! I am most pleased!

I hope this helps someone else.
