Upgrading to IE7

J

Janetb

1. Can I install IE7 directly over IE6, thereby keeping all my settings and
Favorites?
2. Is it preferable to uninstall IE6 before installing IE7? If so, how do I
keep my settings and Favorites?
3. A lot of the folders that my IE6 works out of are still labelled
IE5.5...Is this going to stay that way unless I do a coplete uninstall of IE?
4. Since IE and OE used to come together, would uninstalling IE6 have any
effect on my OE (e.g., addresses, folders, etc.)?

I am on Windows XP Professional SP2 and have been strongly advised by a
computer technician not to install SP3 because of all the havoc it has
wreaked for so many people. I have all the info on how to install SP3 and
IE6,7,8, but have been putting it off because I am scared (paralyzed) of
SP3....:-(....Is it true that after After 12 April 2010 I won't get any
updates if I don't have SP3...?

Thanks for the help!

YES. There is no other way because IE6 cannot be uninstalled.
2. Is it preferable to uninstall IE6 before installing IE7? If so, how do
I
keep my settings and Favorites?

NO because IE6 is hard wired with Windows XP Operating system and cannot be
uninstalled.
3. A lot of the folders that my IE6 works out of are still labelled
IE5.5...Is this going to stay that way unless I do a coplete uninstall of

They are likely to be empty or contains very small files. Leave them as
they are for the time being.

4. Since IE and OE used to come together, would uninstalling IE6 have any

You can't uninstall IE6 so OE6 will still be there even if you install IE7.
IE7 doesn't contain any mail client because OE is completely discontinued by
M$.

No, your computer technician is not competent. You need to install SP3 at
least even if you don't install any updates after SP3 was released.
Personally, I have stopped updating my system with M$ updates because they
are becoming a joke month after month. I have, though, installed SP3 and
that is all.

I have also installed IE8. Could you explain why you don't want to install
IE8? Both IE7 and IE8 can be uninstalled if you don't like them but the
order and the manner you install is critical. For example, if you install
IE7, then SP3 then you can't uninstall IE7 unleass you also uninstall SP3.
You should install SP3 first then either IE7 or IE8. I would go for IE8
direct.

A1. Yes.

A2. You can't uninstall IE6 in WinXP.

A3. No change.

A4. See A2 above.

You need a better "computer techniciain," one who doesn't have his head
buried in the sand. => Extended Support for WinXP SP2 ends on 10 July 2010.
After that date, computers running WinXP SP2 will NOT be offered any further
critical security updates, Automatic Updates will not work, and Windows
Update website will not be accessible until SP3 is installed.
