Uninstall & Re-install IE6

(Win98se; internet = AT&T WorldNet Dial-Up)
I recently installed the update for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB896727) and ever since, after I have gone online (thereby launching Internet Explorer) many applications crash with the message: A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C0287F04 in VXD VMM(06) + 00004F04. (MS Word crashes, as does Windows Update, Windows>shutdown, and the AT&T WorldNet connection manager won't get me online a second time). However, all of these will work again after I reboot.
Two questions, please:
a.. Can anyone explain what my fatal exception means? Is it IE6 or is it deeper into Win98?
b.. Would it be worth uninstalling IE6, in total, and then re-installing it? Any how-to advice will also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

You may need new video drivers. Check the website of your video board or
computer manufacturer. Meanwhile, you can do the following:

1. Use the default mouse pointers.

2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.

3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (Start | Settings |
Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will see
little, if any, performance degradation.

4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

Also check your system for "hijackware":

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or the appropriate forum at
http://aumha.net for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

Oh my . . . help me here, PA Bear. I can't seem to match up your response to the problems I addressed in my question. I may be as dumb as a sack of rocks and just can't understand what you said, but I was asking about the advisability of un/re-installing IE6. If anyone else can get through to me, please help! Thanks.

The 0028 address in the blue screen usually indicates problems with video.
Sometimes it can be fixed by reinstalling your video drivers, sometimes it
requires new ones, and sometimes it is caused by hijackware. That it showed
up after an update is either coincidence or the update brought it to the
front.

If your video (graphics, display) drivers need to be updated, no,
un/re-installing IE6 won't help.

If your problem is due to hijackware, un/re-installing IE6 won't help
either.
