IE6 won't install

Problem:
After installing new anti-virus suite on my home PC with Win98 SE, my IE6
browser failed to load web pages. I disabled the anti-virus program, but
problem persisted.

I contacted Netscape internet service, and was told to re-install Internet
Explorer. I uninstalled IE6, then downloaded IE6 SP1 from Microsoft.com and
tried to install on PC. The installation starts, but does not complete.
"Download Sites" window appears, states that... "Setup is determining the
available sites from which you can install the update to Windows". Then
"Windows Update Setup" window appears with message... "Setup was unable to
download information about available installation sites. Setup may have been
unable to use your current proxy setting..."

I'm no techie, so I'm clueless here. Called Microsoft support, and was told
Win98 no longer supported. Any comments/suggestions gratefully appreciated.

I downloaded IE6 SP1 from the link provided using my PC at work, and tried to
install at home. The new downloaded program appears to be the same file I
downloaded previously (Filename: ie6setup.exe), it still does not install,
and it gives the same error messages shown below.

When downloading, I selected the option "Save program to disk - to copy the
download to your computer for installation at a later time". I copied the
file to a CD and tried to install at home without any luck.

I noticed messages during the download saying something to the effect that
certain files would be installed on the downloading computer and could not be
copied to another drive. If that's the case, is it even possible to download
the full browser to CD for installation on a different computer, or can you
only download the set-up module?

Thanks.

Download/install IE6 SP1 using the full version, not the set-up:

[You could have overinstalled IE6 SP1 in Win98. Too late for that now.]

One place where you can get a single-file full install of IE 6.0 SP-1:

http://www.iconnect.net/download.html
or ftp://ftp.iconnect.net/pub/DOS/browser/index.html

Another source:
http://helpdesk.uvic.ca/software/downloads/windows/msiexpl.html

These are self-extracting .exe files. Put the file in a new folder, click
the .exe file to extract all the files to within said folder, then within
that same folder find the ie6setup.exe file, and click on that to start the
setup of IE itself.

Or see:
