Can't install ie7 or ie8

My pc won't allow IE7 or IE8 to be installed. I shut down my protection
programs, anti virus and spyware stuff, but still it refuses to install. I
try to install by not doing the updates, same result! I am using IE6 which
seems to have a mind of it's own and really would like to update. Can I
delete IE6 and then install or is that impossible ?

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

You cannot delete & reinstall IE6.

Make sure you fully-disable both AVG and Ad-Aware & Ad-Watch (cf. second
post here: http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=19804) before
attempting to install IE7.

I would NOT attempt to install IE8 Beta if you don't already have IE7
installed not would I attempt to install IE7 if IE6 (and Windows Update)
isn't working!

You're welcome.

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
(ignore any references to Vista)

And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Alternately, use this Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9ae91ebe-3385-447c-8a30-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
installing IE7 and install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.
