Or half of it. :)
I'm on the South Island!

Please yourself - have it all if you want (you WERE here first!) - no
problem - I'm not gonna fight you for it. Just let me know, pse.

IMO enough volunteers have come forward to make it worth proceeding with
the CD layout.
YAY!

The consensus seems clearly in favor of excluding programs that do not
permit distribution. I will put together the list of programs that IMO
should be excluded - and post it for further review by the group (may
take me a while to assemble the list).

The rest of you guys hammer out the details and when the
dust has settled I'll let you know where to send my copy of
the ISO.
I'm in Arizona, USA, btw.

Not sure what I've done to offend you, but I'll get over it.

You haven't offended me, Kiddo. Poorly expressed perhaps - my bad. I
only put my hand up for the job coz I thought Godzone was gonna be left
out in the cold (didn't know you was an Aotearoan <shudder - what a
word!>). You have the distro by all means, I'll happily act as your
second-stringer if something turns to custard or it all gets too busy.

The current plan is for a person to mail a stamped self-addressed
envelope with a blank CD to the volunteer who will burn the PL2004 data.
Seems to me that a malicious volunteer would be fairly easy to track
down . . .

IF the damage is immediately evident, yes. Like with a destructive virus.
Not necessarily so with a more subtle spy like a keylogger or a trojan.

I couldn't understand it either. But now I think I can understand what
happened. He kind of assumed there would only be one burner in each
country, area, continent.. who would kind of have the "rights" to the
Pricelessware CD. A position as "the boss" in that area. He claimed that
position first, and you kind of challenged him for that position. That is
how his mind must have worked.

Why do you think you have the right to call him "Kiddo"?
Do you use such patronizing language often when you think somebody has
stepped on your toes?

Your imagination is running wild, you assume things and react to imagined
events, and you react in a bad way.

Also, for the CD to have maximum benefit there would need to be a
mention of the programs/utilities (and links ?) that were Priceless
but not included on the CD.

The plan is to include a copy of the PL2004 web pages on the CD as a
reference. The pages show OS system requirements, links to the sites
etc. and of course *all* the PL programs.

Kiddo is not a derogatory thingie in my little part of the world as |I
use the term often. Having been married to a Brit for many years, I also
use the term love when talking to women - this has offended some in the
past, but it is a hard thing to stop saying on my part.

I don't use the term "kiddo" myself (it's used mainly by those a little
further south than myself), but I use the term "darling" or "love" when
conversing with women. Must admit, alot of people seem to take offence to
something thats actually meant as the complete opposite.

I'm having trouble envisioning this kind of problem. IMO the CD files
should be as safe or safer than downloaded files.

*Nothing* is completely foolproof. A bit of precaution at the receiving
end makes sense. I routinely scan downloaded files even when I trust the
site.

Definitely I vote that nothing be included on the Priceleware CD which
violates an author's redistribution prohibitions.

Something I hadn't thought about until 5 minutes ago, is that anything
which is released under the GNU public licence requires that if you
distribute a compiled version on a CD (the FAQ for The Gimp does
specifically say Cover CD, but I guess the concept is the same) it must
contain the source code as well as the executable. Now if it's decided
that the CD should include programs released under GNU, if people who
use them could let us know what they are I don't have a problem grabbing
the sources.

One other idea, how about creating an ISO image of the CD and making it
available for download?

Re: CD distribution after the first round of copies has been sent

I see it working this way:

Someone posts a request for a CD to the list - someone else posts a
response saying I'm willing to make a copy. Then the two people involved
switch to email.

Anyone who has the PL2004 CD could volunteer to make a copy when a
request is posted.

Comments?

I couldn't understand it either. But now I think I can understand what
happened.

No, you can't. The best you can do is have a (very) wild guess. Think a
bit more and you will come to realise that you do not have even the
faintest idea.

He kind of assumed there would only be one burner in each
country, area, continent.. who would kind of have the "rights" to the
Pricelessware CD.

Oh, bollocks! I assumed ¡X wrongly, as it turns out ¡X that there was
nobody else in this part of the globe involved, so I offered to do it. At
that time I did not know that Bambam was also in this country.

A position as "the boss" in that area. He claimed that
position first, and you kind of challenged him for that position. That is
how his mind must have worked.

Do not presume to guess how my mind may or may not work. You know as well
as I do that there is, and can be, no such thing as a "boss" in this
context so your argument is completely specious. Furthermore, by what
tortuous reasoning do you conclude that I was "here first" when Bambam's
name was on the list (without any mention of location) well prior to my
putting my hand up? Do try to engage brain before putting mouth in gear!
[...]

Why do you think you have the right to call him "Kiddo"?

What do you think gives you the right to try to tell me what I should and
should not say to people? Since when have you - posting from a Swedish
address - been an authority on how one New Zealander should speak to
another New Zealander? Butt out and mind your own bloody business, at
least until you have some vague idea of what you are talking about.

Do you use such patronizing language often when you think somebody has
stepped on your toes?

No ¡X but I'll make an exception for you, Blossom. Nobody has stepped on
my toes, but it appears that you are doing your level best.

Your imagination is running wild, you assume things and react to imagined
events, and you react in a bad way.

If that is what you choose to believe, then who am I to deny you your
moment in the sun? You are just as entitled to be wrong and make a fool
of yourself as is the next person.

Get real, learn to behave.

Get stuffed. I do not, and will not, answer to you for anything I may say
or do. Learn to mind your own business, difficult though that may be for
you.

Sounds good to me. Only fly in the ointment I can see there is the
possibility of the requestor being swamped by offers ¡V but that isn't
necessarily a bad thing, is it?

It depends on the context. If somebody starts to use such words when he
obviously is angry or offended it cannot be seen as anything but
patronizing, and as a very ugly way to react.

A word like Kiddo could easily be seen as offending even in other contexts,
but in this case there isn't even another possible interpretation.

Fine, but who is going to go through hundreds of programs one by one
to see what is missing ? IMO a list of the programs NOT included is
needed.

An even better idea would be to link the download links, for the
downloads on the CD, to the included PL list.

Like one might get from a computer magazine cover disk. Something like
; Download page: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html would need to
point to 7z311.exe on the CD.

Regards, John.

You go to all that work and I still have troubles. All the trouble of
putting them into categories and I can't figure what category I want.

Case in point. I was looking for a ghost type program the other day and had
no idea what category that would come under. For that matter, I still
don't. Alphabetical doesn't help either unless you know what it's called.

I have no idea how to make it plainer for us dummies so I guess the best
thing is to just ask like I always do. :)-))
