xp SP3 question

Debbie Graham

I was at my brother's today and noticed he didn't have SP3 installed, so I
installed it for him and now he doesn't h ave internet connection after he
rebooted. Would SP3 cause this? I tried to release his IP and renew it and
nothing happens. The repair under internet connections says it can't renew
IP address, so I ran the CMD and ipconfig /release and then renew and still
nothing. Help!

SP3 generally works OK
but there have always been a few problems.

Have a look in the control panel to see if maybe SP3 broke the drivers for
the net card.

also do you use a third party firewall such as Zone Alarm?
SP3 may have broken it...or changed the settings

Philo, can you show me where you raed that service pack 3 "broke the
drivers for the net card "?

I did NOT say that SP3 broke the drivers for the net card...
I told the OP simply to check that (as a precaution)

Surely you wouldn't tell the OP to "look in the control panel to see if
maybe SP3 broke the drivers for the net card" if you had no basis to
believe that service pack 3 does, in fact, 'break' these drivers?

All I'm asking is that you show us where you read that SP 3 breaks
drivers for network cards. Does it break all network card drivers or
just some? Which brands? Have the affected brands released updates for
their 'broken' drivers?

The same thing happened to me (assuming your brother's computer connects to
the internet via an ethernet connection). Several from this group helped me
figure out what to do. There were a number of suggestions, but what
finally worked was uninstalling and then reinstalling the network adapters.
Actually, I uninstalled the adapters and then Windows reinstalled them
automatically during a cold restart at which point they worked again.

Go to Control Panel -- System -- Hardware -- Device Manager--Network
Adapters (you may have serveral; I had three) and then one-by-one, right
click (to bring up a list of choices) -- then click uninstall (not disable).

When you're done, power down and then restart.

Does the OP's brother use the Zone Alarm firewall?

If so, a fairly recent SP3 security update conflicted with Zone Alarm
and prevented access to the Internet. The problem was well documented
at the time. Zone Alarm released an update within a few days but by
then, the damage had been done and many people worldwide had lost the
ability to connect to the Internet.

If the OP's brother is using Zone Alarm, he should try disabling the
firewall completely - and enable the Windows XP firewall. If this
restores his Internet connection, he should download and install the
latest version of ZoneAlarm.

This is what I know as a fact:

*some* Windows updates can *sometimes* "break" a driver.

Though personally my feeling is that my 2nd bit of advice...
concerning a firewall...is the more likely scenario...
it would have taken the OP all of about 15 seconds to check for a possible
driver problem.

So you *don't* know that SP 3 breaks network card drivers. You're only
guessing, because /some/ updates do break /some/ things, and you need a
functioning network card to access the internet so, what the heck, worth
a shot, right?

Yes...
If your car does not start...it does not hurt to check if there is gas in
it.

For the (timed it) ten seconds it takes to check the net card
I figured it was a good enough precaution.

Anyway...I just looked at the other responces and see that one person at
least did have to reinstall their network
adaptor after SP3

Why are you so picky?

Okay he said he has internet today, I told him his internet provider might
have been having problems. He uses Norton after I told him not to use those
products anymore. I don't think SP3 had anything to do with it, I just
wanted to make sure. I was disabling some of his services and re enable
them so maybe something I disabled didn't work for him like it does me.
Thanks
Debbie
