Microsoft Update screwed up my ethernet connection- help!!!

Installed a Microsot update for the D-Link - Networking - D-Link DGE-530T
Gigabit Ethernet Adapter today. Afterward, I lost all connection to the
Adaptor. I eventually uninstalled the D-Link Driver, rebooted and then
Windows 'Acquired Network Address'. So then I was connected.

On next reboot, the same problem. No connection, can't repair the
connection, can't locate an IP Address (even tried dos
ipconfig/release...ipconfig/renew to no avail.).

What the heck did the update do to my D-Link Hardware? It's a real nuissance
having to disable my adapter and reboot just to use the internet.

System:
Windows XP professional sp2
Dell Dimension 8100
D-Link - Networking - D-Link DGE-530T Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Bios Version A02

The mistake was to do an update from Microsoft - hardware updates are all
best downloaded from the hardware manufacturer's web site.

If no-one has noticed, I have a rather jaundiced view of
Microsoft updates but I installed the latest one without any
abnormal happenings: FIOS connection and Actiontec broadband
router.
