Lost Ethernet - DSL Modem Connection

Hi! I'm able to connect wirelessly to internet the through DSL modem just
fine on my laptop - so I know the DSL modem is working ok. Desktop that
connects to DSL modem via ethernet cable has lost its connection - it had
been working just fine (have not changed any physical connection since
network connection dropped).

Light just blinks where plugged into modem. Happened once before and it was
some controller or other than needed to be reinstalled, however, nothing on
the device manager is currently showing red.

Have tried deleting and reinstalling for the network connections on desktop
to no avail. (compaq presario sr1475cl running xp sp2) I've tried swapping
out ethernet cables and tried different connections sites on the modem (it
has E1 - E4). I've also already reset the modem, rebooted numerous times with
and without the cables plugged in and tried a slower modem port speed to no
avail. I don't think it is a HW problem external to the computer. I should
add that with some things I try, I get a message about TCP/IP not being
enabled (but when I check the network connection it shows that it is checked
for that connection) - so thinking problem has to do with whatever controller
manages the ethernet connection or internal modem or some TCP/IP issue. The
ipconfig says:
Node type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: No
Wins proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:
Media State: Media Disconnected
Description: SiS 900-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address: 00-11-D8-C2-A0-F8

Tunnel Adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface
Physical Address: FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF
Dhcp Enabled: No
IP Address: Fe80::ffff::ffff::fffd%4
Default Gateway:
Netbios over TCPIP: disabled

Thanks in advance!

sounds like a modem
issue.

if you run a cmd window
and run ipconfig you should
not get a bunch of f's.

you can try ipconfig / release
then an ipconfig /renew

if you still get f's you
should contact your isp
to get the correct dns
and ip addresses....

Your net card probably has a flaky connection somewhere in the plug or wire.
I would wiggle the plug in the port for the nic, to see if the connection
comes back up.

Thank you for your responses. We've opened the box up and reseated the card.
Unfortunately, no luck. Tried the ipconfig and got, "No operation can be
performed on Local Area Connection 3 while it has its media disconnected."

This message usually means that the cable between your modem and your
computer is not making good contact. "Media" in this message means "cable".

Sounds like your ethernet card has flaked out. You've already tried various
ethernet cables and different ports on the modem, so that rules out external
problems... try putting in a new ethernet card. As soon as you connect an
ethernet cable to the port on the card, and the other end is connected to
your modem/router, it should automatically try to obtain an IP address and
the "media state" would become "connected". If it doesn't do that, sounds
like the card is ready for the trash can (or someone tech-savvy enough to
figure out what's wrong with it -- usually not worth the time / effort).

Best Wishes,
Kurosh
