Network WinXP Home with Win98FE

Hi

I have had my network working between WinXP Home and Win98FE using
DHCP, but wanted to improve things by using Static IP addresses.
The two computers are connected via ethernet cables to a Verizon
Actiontec GT704WG DSL Modem/router.
(The DELL1150 notebook also has a Linksys wireless NIC that is
disabled at the moment.)

The router has DHCP addresses starting at 192.168.1.64 and ending at
192.168.1.254 (the default).
I am using (so far) static IP addresses of:
192.168.1.10 for HARV950 (Win98FE desktop)
192.168.1.11 for DELL1150 (WinXP Home notebook)

With DHCP the router listed the host names of both with their IP
addresses,
but with static IP the names are not listed in the routers
configuration page.
Why?

I have added both entries into both HOSTS files.

THE PROBLEM:
I can access files on HARV950 from DELL1150,
But not DELL1150 files from HARV950.
ping of DELL1150 from itself times out.

QUESTIONS:
Should I uninstall IP6 from DELL1150?
Is there any reason that I would need IP6?
Why is the node type of HARV950 "Broadcast", while DELL1150 is
"Unknown"?
What does [::1} mean in tracert?
What are the other two Ethernet adapters being reported on HARV950
(both PPP adapters)?
Of the inconsistencies, which should I change to match the other, or
not?
Anything else I should change?

MORE INFO:
Doing tracert from HARV950 of either name or dotted quad reports all
quickly and correctly.
But from DELL1150 gives three ok, but it's own name as:

C:\>tracert DELL1150

Why do you say that using static IP addresses will improve things? Is
there a problem on the network using dynamic IP addresses? If not, I
recommend keeping dynamic IP addresses. I see no advantage to static,
and it's harder to set up.

The router configuration page shows computers that have dynamic IP
addresses assigned by the router's DHCP server. Since you assigned
static IP addresses, the router doesn't know about the computers.

There's no reason to set up a Hosts file on either computer.

NetBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled on both computers. It appears to
be disabled on DELL1150. Disable "NetBIOS resolution uses DNS" on
HARV950.

It's OK to uninstall IPv6 if nothing on DELL1150 uses it.

Node types "Unknown" and "Broadcast" are both OK. These Microsoft
Knowledge Base articles have details:

Default Node Type for Microsoft Clients

TCP/IP and NBT Configuration Parameters for Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314053

PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) adapters are used for dial-up
networking. There will be two of them if HARV950 has two dial-up
modems installed.

I found that if I turn off the Windows Firewall on DELL1150, then the
computer shows up in HARV950.
How do I set the firewall to allow access?
A few days ago I clicked the [Restore Defaults] button in Windows
Firewall /Advanced tab and saw that many entries disappeared.
I thought that was a mistake, but no way to undo. Right?

And please still answer and comment on my first post.

TIA,
Harvey

Steve,
Thanks for the quick response.
I thought that Static IP's on both computers (and in both HOSTS files)
would make it so that the computers would see each other immediately
rather than the long wait whenever I click on Network Neighborhood or
My Network Places.
So if this won't help, how do I get them to recognize each other
faster?
Thanks again,
Harvey

Default Node Type for Microsoft Clientshttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;160177

TCP/IP and NBT Configuration Parameters for Windows XPhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314053

PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) adapters are used for dial-up
networking. There will be two of them if HARV950 has two dial-up
modems installed.

Steve,
Thanks for the quick response.
I thought that Static IP's on both computers (and in both HOSTS files)
would make it so that the computers would see each other immediately
rather than the long wait whenever I click on Network Neighborhood or
My Network Places.
So if this won't help, how do I get them to recognize each other
faster?
Thanks again,
Harvey

You're welcome, Harvey. The problem with using Network Neighborhood
or My Network Places in a home (workgroup) network is that they rely
on Windows' network browsing function. IMHO, network browsing is
badly designed and inherently unreliable, and I recommend not using
it. You can spend a lot of time troubleshooting it (as shown by many
messages in this news group), but I don't think it's worthwhile.

On each computer, create a desktop shortcut to the other computer. In
the shortcut properties, specify the location of the item in this
format, substituting the name of the other computer:

\\computer

To access the other computer, click the shortcut. It should work
almost instantly.

You can also create a desktop shortcut to shared folder(s) on the
other computer. Specify the location of the item as:

\\computer\share

Hello Harvey,

you should consider removing the entries you put in the two HOSTS files.
Name resolution "My Network Places" and "Network Neighbourhood" relies on
NetBIOS, not TCPIP. If you still have trouble with a slow response, try
running the Windows XP "Network Setup Wizard". Last but not least, you
should try an LMHOSTS file, if need be. There's a sample file called
lmhosts.sam in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc directory. But I'd only
recommend this as a last resort, and not for the notebook, since you may use
it on other class-c networks (TCPIP networks with address's 192.168.xxx.xxx
and netmask of 255.255.255.0).

Regards,

Andrew Leith.

Tracing route to DELL1150 [::1]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms DELL1150 [::1]
Trace complete.
Here are the ipconfig/all listings of both machines.
