installed xp SP3 release and now internet crawls

B

Bill Woodruff

Hi,

Acer Laptop Aspire 1600 running Windows XP Home.

Previously ... two months or so ago ... I had installed both the beta SP3
and IE 8 beta 1. My internet upload and download and browsing via ADSL was
slowed to a crawl.

Removing both beta SP3 and IE 8 beta 1 brought back internet performance to
spec.

So, now that SP3 release is available, I installed that today.

Once again all internet performance about 10% or less of normal.

Any ideas ... other than the obvious one which is to remove SP3 release ?

thanks, Bill

either uninstall sp3
again and simply avoid

you might even direct this

Two months ago - the final release of SP3 was available. heh

Why not update your hardware drivers and see if maybe one of them fixed an
issue with their driver?

Do you utilize Zone Alarm (any of their products)? If so - have you updated
to their latest release?

When you installed SP3 - did you follow the best practices and current
suggestions out there?

Key things to note:

Internet Explorer:
"If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of
Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall
Internet Explorer. To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta
version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP
SP3. If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3,
uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002:
"If you install Windows XP SP3 on a computer running Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2002 with SP1, Windows XP Media Center Edition may malfunction. To
avoid this, install Windows XP SP2 before you install Windows XP SP3. If
this issue has already occurred, uninstall Windows XP SP3, install Windows
XP SP2, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3."

It seems some people are unable to get further updates after installing
SP3... Seems some have experienced a symptom similar to doing a repair
installation on Windows XP - and the same fix seems to work for them for
that...

Beyond that - some simple maintenance might be needed - like installing the
latest hardware drivers from your hardware vendors...

In case you wonder why you should go through all of that to install one
service pack (which is 1179 updates all rolled into one) - know that much of
what is suggested - you should have been doing all along. ;-)

Hi Shenan,

Just wanted you to thank you very much for this exhaustive reply, which I
will study carefully.

Yes, it must have been more than two months ago when I installed the SP3
preview along with IE 8 beta 1 and saw the same degradation of all internet
facilities leading to their prompt un-install.

I use IE7 constantly, and never wish to remove it, so I believe I am "safe"
in not messing around with that.

I am a software developer, so this machine (my laptop, Acer Aspire 1800,
intel cpu) is kept up to date with the latest KB fixes, etc.

best, Bill

I do hope you get it figured out...

Windows Updates - but what about hardware driver updates from the
manufacturer of the individual components (or at least Acer)? Do *not*
(IMHO) trust Windows Update's version of Optional Hardware Updates to keep
you 'up to date'. Go straight to the manufacturer.

How much memory on this system?
Free drive space?
Last time you CHKDSK'd?
Last time you DEFRAG'd?
Done a Disk Cleanup and removed all but the last Restore point (if that is
okay for you to do - as you are a software developer - you know how far back
you need at any given time.)

Being a software developer - I would like to ask (curiosity) - do you
utilize virtual machines to develop your software and test it or do you just
test it on your own machine?
