XP Home problem after installing SP3

G

Gill

In error, I downloaded SP3. My pc is running XP Home with IE7 and Netgear
Wireless adapter WG111T (USB port) with a Belkin 802.11g Wireless Cable/DSL
Internet Gateway Router. All were working fine until I installed SP3. I
had checked all drivers were up to date when I bought the Belkin router.

Now I get the blue screen (forgot the error code as I'm at work) but it was
something like 0X0000001FC - it said it was to do with not enough memory.
When I press F8 on startup, it does take me to the proper screen - change the
order of loading to try to boot from CD and it doesn't even do that.
Eventually it just goes back to the blue screen. F2 and F12 are no help
either as I can't even start in Safe Mode so I can off SP3. Please help as
not much hair left now :(

Now I get the blue screen with error code STOP 0x000000FC (ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY). Its a Dell PC with Intel, not an AMD, so shouldn't have had a problem.

Sorry to add to the above! Error code is

STOP 0x000000FC (ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY)

Thanks for that db! Did manage to finally get Windows to load, but not
shows 2 OS on the start up screen so just load the top one as the other isn't
complete - no idea hoe to get rid of that yet....lol All my programs are
showing, but it's hopeless to get on t'internet - ran out of time this
evening so will try again. Did notice when I opened Explorer it had loaded
a drive for AMD fo uninstalled that pdq. Will save all the info you sent me
so I can have a good look tomorrow.

Thanks again for replying.

you're welcome.

there is another command
you can run from the prompt
like the others called:

bootcfg /rebuild

it will scan the disk for
all the o.s.'s installed.

it will ask for a line
number then a line
description for each
o.s.

keep it simple for
now, just so the process
can rebuild the menu.

later, you can manually
modify that boot menu
from inside windows.

Once again, many thanks for your help db. When I logged on this evening it
told me I had all the updates to download, so even though I knew that the
would have been superceded, thought I would go through the motions and also
install IE7. Surprisingly, that got me up and running....presumably, even
though all my programs were showing as being installed, IE was there but not
working. Now its back to speed again <<<<gives self a pat on the back>>>>>
Would that command you gave me - bootcfg /rebuild - show up the other
operating system on start up? As when loading it comes to a halt and shows
that I have 2 Windows OS so have to make sure I click on the top one within
30 seconds. Can't find it anywhere when looking through Explorer and
thought it may have been on the backup D drive, but I moved that into a
different place just to see and it didn't make any difference. Doesn't
matter as its not slowing the system down at all, but I would like to
understand where it is on the PC.

You're a star btw!

[not sure why my
newsreader is not
posting. but I'll
try again]

you're welcome.

------------

the bootcfg has provided
you with the 2 o.s.'s which
is pretty good.

modifying it is pretty simple.

the instructions can be
found here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022

basically, just modify the
details between the quotation
marks with the description
you want to appear on the
boot menu.

then save.

you can modify your
descriptions again,
if they don't sound
exactly right on the
boot menu.
