XP Home. Not Saving Settings.

I seem to be having a problem with a friends PC loaded with XP Home SP1.

For a reason I cant seem to work out XP is not saving any settings that
make, including any icons placed on the desktop.

Anytime I make a change a to IE options it only sticks for the one session
the moment I reset the machine it defaults back to the previous settings,
the same happens if I place an icon on the desktop, come restart the icon is
removed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Andrew.

Andrew.
It sounds as if you have a mandatory user profile set.
Search for a file called ntuser.man - if you dohave that, rename it
ntuser.dat and reboot.
Let us know if that was the answer.

Thanks for the response.

Did a search for ntuser.man and the search came up blank (was also searching
hidden files). Can I delete all the ntuser.dat files without adverse
effect?

No - do not delete the ntuser.dat files. They form part of the registry for
each user profile.
