LAN connection to adsl/router/wifi slooooow!

hi,

I think it's since the last batch of Windows updates to my XP Home edition,
that after system tray has populated, there is a long delay (30 seconds or
more), before the LAN icon appears. And just before it does, there is a
fleeting red shield icon with a pop-out balloon from XP security centre
advising that there's no firewall.

Tried MS Fixit scripts to rebuild TCP/IP stack | cleared out TIF and Temp
folders | rebooted router ( TP-LINK TDW8901G ), reset IE security settings,
....andrummaged in other places !

....wondering if AVG full Internet security suite is unhappy with that latest
batch of Windows updates, or whether an AVG update caused this, and
wondering if anyone else has developed a long wait until LAN icon appears in
system tray.

any pointers grataefully received.

regards, Richard

Well ! What a deafening silence !

So, I've restored my PC to how it was 15 days ago, and the momentary red
shield in the system tray saying that there is no firewall active / and the
slow to appear LAN icon, problems are rectified. I've updated AVG internet
security suite and rebooted and LAN icon quickly appears in system tray - so
all is still fine :)

Now, because I've made my system 15 days old, Windows update wants to pile
in :-

KB2846071
KB2833940
KB2844285
KB2840629
KB2832407
KB2835393
KB2840628
KB2834904
KB2834886
KB2845187
KB2850581
KB890830

Any idea if one of these was responsible for interfering with AVG firewall
and / or making my LAN icon take ages to show up ?

Sorry, should have said: "Prior to your system restore, is it possible
that you may have installed Microsoft Security Essentials?"

Hi, thanks for your input. Have since discovered that subsequent reboots,
(after restoring boot drive to 15 days+ old image and allowing AVG suite to
update itself, and before Windows updates), momentary MS Sec. centre red
shield in system tray and slow LAN icon, re-manifests itself. So now it's
looking like AVG is not up to scratch, after a more than one reboot.

So will have to start a more thorough hunt, as it seems that the last batch
of KB's are not responsible. For a while it seemed as though security
modules in .net bloatware were responsible, and I considered removing all
..net versions prior to v.4 and running MS's .net cleanup tool but, my Ghost
14.0 needs .net v2, and AVS video converter needs .net v3?, and I don't
trust Ms's claim that the latest .net v4 will cater for all previous
versions / demands by apps. placed on it.

I don't have MS Sec. Ess. installed, hence Windows update didn't list
KB2855265.

Anyhoo, one is planning to do a more methodical hunt, during the next few
days, as I have to finish helping an Aunt prepare four walls and a ceiling,
(that were papered), for painting !!

So here's hoping that problems go away all by themselves !

Well, well, well,

AVG installed update/s?, just before I went into the house for lunch, and
when I came back out here into my office | did a reboot | and fleeting red
"no firewall active" message from XP system tray has gone, and LAN
connection icon turned up in a more normal speedy manner !

....so it looks like AVG got something wrong, a short while ago :)
