Any idea why my XP LAN connection to my Linksys WAG354G (adsl
modem-router-wireless), becomes unresponsive when I right-click "Local Area
connection" in System Tray ? ...this problem recently appeared after
adjusting some (seemingly unrelated bios settings.
Pondering on recent "changes" that could have caused it, ...the most recent
"adjustment" was to disable the Gaming Port in bios. So I went back into
bios and "enabled" it, and the above described effect / problem with LAN
connection goes away. ...so why would the gaming port bios switch cause a
problem with LAN connection to my router ?
Possibly of relevance :-
I've noticed that when XP (Home ed. SP3 ... all up to date), is loading up,
one of the several "system tray bubbles from AVG 8.0 internet security suite
| firewall" informs me that "Gaming Mode is disabled," obviously an option
I chose during installation of AVG. ...just to be clear, I don't play
games across the internet.
....during the past couple of weeks, I replaced 2x512mb Crucial ddr400/pc3200
memory modules out, for 4x Corsair XMS 512mb 3200LL modules, and with
brilliant help from Paul, in this NG, ...fathomed out the correct memory
....XP timings and other bios settings.
No other problems have occurred, ..i.e. this PC is "sweet as a nut," other
than the above described effect.
(after each reboot, PC is left for a good couple of minutes to fully settle,
....XP indexing ...Nero and other "indexing" is switched off, ...I keep any
eye on all "Startup" locations / items i.e. they are not stuffed full of
c**p ...for software that hardly ever gets used, ...I even switch off the
Norton Ghost service in XP services until I do a hd image !)
If Gaming Port is disabled in bios | System Tray LAN connection is
right-clicked and "disable" option is left-clicked, the LAN icon stays in
the tray "lit-up" and is no longer responsive e.g. to a right-click.
With gaming Port enabled in bios, (as it always has been btw - I just
thought I'd switch it off because it never gets anything plugged into it),
....there is not problem with LAN | Disable.
TIA for any clues,
regards, Richard
