LOSING DESKTOP SETTINGS ON REBOOT

Guest

Since performing an XP repair install, I keep losing my desktop settings on
startup. Each time I start up or reboot I have to reset my icons and my
desktop background color. I click 'apply' at each reset, but when the
computer restarts I have to go through the same process again---the settings
aren't being saved. Any ideas?

Scroll down to...

Save Settings on Exit - Don't Save Settings
Click on...
Save Settings on Exit

savesettings.reg is the file that you want.
-----

Or set NoSaveSettings to 0 here...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer

NoSaveSettings Description
[[Prevents users from saving certain changes to the desktop. Users can
change the desktop, but some changes, such as the positions of open windows
or the size and position of the taskbar, are not saved when users log off.
Shortcuts placed on the desktop are always saved.]]

Also check this key for NoSaveSettings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Policies\Explorer

If NoSaveSettings does not exist, it is the same as if it were set 0, the
policy is disabled or not configured. Changes to the desktop are saved.

If NoSaveSettings is set 1, the policy is enabled. Some changes to the
desktop are not saved.

Wesley---Thanks for your prompt reply to my issue, but unfortunately it
didn't work. I downloaded the fix from kellyskorner and rebooted---still
didn't save my settings. Also checked the reg. keys as you suggested, and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER setting was "0"----'NoSaveSettings' wasn't present in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Any other ideas?

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.
