I keep losing my desktop icons and toolbar. The screen just goes to the
background picture. Then the icons flash up with the toolbar before
disappearing again. How can I stop this from happening?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

Things changed after I downloaded a newer version of Mcafee off Limewire - I
presume this was a corrupt version and have since removed Mcafee from the
computer. I have since added AVG, Spybot, Ad-Aware - they are now saying
there are no viruses on computer. I've tried to restore the computer to a
date prior to loading the Mcafee but the computer doesn't give me an option
for a date prior to that.

Since you have been running Limewire:

Do not skip the prep work.
