XP/he - Norton AntiVirus

Does Norton AntiVirus 2003 cause problems with XP home edition?

I just received a Norton error message that states the help files are
corrupted and I should uninstall and reinstall. I'm inclined to reinstall
with something else.

It works fine on my pc, been using it since I bought it around the end of
August.
 
Why pay $$$ to use norton when you can have the same level of protection
with AVG Free Edition & Still get Regualr virus updates for free??
 
I had a lot of problems with Norton Antivirus 2004 and
Windows XP. But one of the automatic updates at the start
of the year fixed it.
