XP freezing

I'm running XP on an HP laptop. The computer is freezing
up consistently. When I restart Windows, it freezes up
also. I tried to download the XP service pack today, and
it froze halfway through the download.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?
Help!!

Thanks,

I had the same problem with a desktop computer. The
problem turned out to be a bad power supply. Most people
think that when a power supply goes bad, it just goes out.
Not true. Rather, a bad power supply surges and gaps, and
may result in apparent system freeze. Not saying this is
the cause of your problem, but might be worth checking out.

If you have MS Office 2000 on board, try disabling it
temporarily. If you have a good CD for reload, it might
help to uninstall it to see if the problem persists. A
corrupt MS Office or Office XP is a problem with the OS.
