windows login issues

Hello

A user has just encountered an interesting problem. When she logs on, she is
able to successfully login, however, when she clicks an icon (My Computer, My
Documents, etc...), the pc will just become unresponsive. When I try to
restart or log off, explore.exe message pops up on the screen saying that it
needs to be stopped before shutdown.

Any thoughts? There is not an error in the event log that could pertain to
this issue

Thanks

Greg

Explore.exe is malware. If the file is Explorer.exe or Iexplore.exe you
have another problem, possibly still malware.

Do some part of the fol, owing:

Burn BitDefender, or another program listed at the link below, to a CD
(using a working machine) and test the infected machine with it.
BitDefender also has a Rootkit checker on the Linux Desktop; run it if
you think that's the problem:

Download the executable rather than the .iso image, if one is available,
(though no .exe is available for BitDefender).

After the scan is run, consider this.. if you choose to quarantine,
they're quarantined to RAM and lost after you reboot. You'll need to
copy any quarantined files to the hard drive, a thumb drive or elsewhere
before exiting Knoppix Live.

Then run these:

SuperAntispyware

Try shellexview to troubleshoot explorer. Basically you disable non-microsoft
extension (sort the company column) and if the problem goes away one of them
is causing the problem. Then you have to re-enable the others perhaps one at
a time.
