Thanks JohanL49. I followed the istructions in the link you provided, and it
worked perfectly to fix the problem.
Oh, and I changed my display name to avoid any further confusion that I am
still using IE7 when I am not anymore. Thanks again!

My problem with Microsoft Defender is that there is an applet on my startbar
telling that an update has been downloaded and ready to install, but whenever
I try to install, it fails every time.

Definition Update 1.13.1276.3 for BETA Windows Defender (KB892519)

"Updates were unable to be successfully installed". Get this message every
time.
Have tried uninstalling and re-installing the program. |Made no difference.

I think you may need this sequence--not sure though, but it may be worth
trying:
(This is from Steve Dodson in relation to a different error--getting asked
for a disk during def update--so I'm prescribing it "off label"--but I don't
think it'll be harmful, and it may do the job.)

1) Uninstall WD thru Add and Remove Programs

2) Launch cmd prompt

3) MsiExec.exe /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

4) Delete all contents of Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates

5) Reinstall WD

I also have that problem. I just installed it but it says there is no updates
which there should be becuase it was created 10 days ago.

I followed the instructions and it did the trick. All is now well.

Many thanks indeed. I'm very grateful.

What kind of network are you on? Have you gone to Windows Update to see if
signature updates are offered? Is AutoUpdate active on your machine?

OK --I can see how that long string can be daunting.

here's what I'd do. Open:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915105/en-us

highlight the whole command starting with the capital M and ending with the
close curly bracket--you may find that the comma wants to come along.
right-click it and choose copy

Then do Start, run, and click in the box and paste the command there. If
the comma came along for the ride, hit the end button and backspace once to
get rid of the comma. Then hit enter

(Whoops--be sure to do step 1 first!)

Then follow up with step 3.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps: 1. Remove the current signature
file. To do this, click Start, click Run, type Msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}, and then click OK.
2. Open Windows Defender. To do this, click Start, click Programs, and then
click Windows Defender.
3. Check for new definitions. To do this, click the Help options arrow next
to the Windows Defender Help icon, click About Windows Defender, and then
click Check for Updates.

I have updated my defender numerous times and it shows in the history but not
in the add and remove program so now I want to completely uninstall it and be
done with it. I have Windows XP 2002 SP2. I just want to uninstall it not
reinstall it. Can anyone tell me how to uninstall it?

I would recommend doing a new download of Windows Defender, disabling
real-time protection in your antivirus application, and installing over the
current install.

Then enable real-time protection, and see whether that gives you an entry in
add or remove programs. If it does, just uninstall via add or remove
programs.
