Defender Update error 0x80070643

Attempting to update Windows Defender produces the following error message:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update:
0x80070643. Fatal error during installation.

Windows Update runs just fine (it even updates the definition files for
Windows Defender!), but Windows Defender is unable to update itself.

"Help me if you can I'm Feeling down..."

Hello Shoeless,

AutoUpdate--the native automatic update mode of Windows Defender uses the
BITS service.

Do you have automatic updates turned on--for Windows?

The right strategy for a dialup user is just to ignore the update
process--let the bits service do its thing--dial in when you want, hang up
when you want. Bits should use unused bandwidth when it can, resume, etc,
until it gets the file in.

I quote Stu--a regular contributor here:

Start/Run
Type "services.msc"
Click "OK"

Please check the following are stªrted:

1.Automatic Updates
2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
3.Cryptographic Services
4.Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
5.System Restore Service

To verify that BITS is correctly configured :

1. Double-click `Background Intelligent Transfer Service.`
2. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then Apply.
3. Click the `Log On` tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in
every hardware profile that you have listed. If the service is disabled in
one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, Enable, and then
Apply.
4. Click the General tab and then Start.

If BITS starts successfully, visit the Windows Update Web site or the
Microsoft Update Web site to see if you can obtain updates. If it works OK,
change (2.) to automatic.

Can you give reproduction steps? Is this via add or remove program, Windows
Defender, change, update?

All services are starting and seem properly configured (I even started System
Restore which I don't normally use).

Windows defender is still generating the same message.

Method 1: When Windows Defender starts it says my definitions are XXX days
old and asks if I want to update. I click on the update now button. Since
Windows Update has updated the definitions file this page and button no
longer appear.

Method 2: Inside Windows defender: Help Options Menu -> About Window
Defender then Click the "Check for Updates" Button.

Either method produces the same result.

BTW: I'm on an extremely fast T1 line behind myriad firewall/security
systems (national weapons laboratory)

Windows Update and Microsoft Update worked with the services as configured
before and the still work despite me enabling System Restore.

OK - I wasn't clear what kind of update was generating the error.

Both mechanisms you cite use AutoUpdate. So--I'd research this as an
autoupdate error--and it probably means that autoupdate is not working for
other updates as well. I did some searching and didn't find anything that
was clearly relevant--so maybe it would be useful to look at your log file:

Do an attempted update via help, about, check for updates then:

start, run

notepad %windir%/windowsupdate.log
<enter>

Scroll to the end of the log file, then highlight back up to the time of the
start of that last attempt. You may get useful clues by reading, and you
can also cut and paste the result back here and we can take a look at it. I
don't have a lot of experience at this, but it is worth trying.

OK - now I've read your earlier replies to others in the thread. Let's see
the log file. I believe you will find that AutoUpdate is configured to
connect to an internal server at your institution. That server may
intentionally not have Windows Defender updates available.

Your error message is not typical of this scenario--but some variation of it
seems most likely, given the institutional context.

I don't get a lot out of this either. Are you, perhaps offline from the
corporate network at the time the log was taken?

The 43 updates part suggests to me that this is a machine which has had SP2
installed, but nothing since. I'd have thought that some of those 43 would
be prerequisites to Windows Defender though.....

Anyway--what I DO think I get out of this is that your institution uses SMS
backed by SUS to distribute patches internally.

Because SUS has an end-of-life of December 2006, Microsoft chose to support
distribution of Windows Defender definitions via WSUS--the newer replacement
mechanism for SUS.

So--in your situation, Windows Defender definitions won't be available
automatically within the program unless your institution upgrades to WSUS
(likely, I suspect) and the WSUS administrators choose to make Windows
Defender definitions available--(can't predict likelyhood.)

Since you can reach Windows Update, you can update manually via that method.

the log file. I believe you will find that AutoUpdate is configured to
connect to an internal server at your institution. That server may
intentionally not have Windows Defender updates available.

Your error message is not typical of this scenario--but some variation of
it
seems most likely, given the institutional context.
