Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80070643.

I have seen many people having problems installing and updating Windows
Defender, but no one else seems to be getting this error. I did have
Microsoft Antispyware and loved it. I have uninstalled both Microsoft
Antispyware and Windows Defender many times. I have also done the Msiexec /x
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} as suggested with no success at all.

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80070643. Fatal error
during installation.

Additional info.
1. I tried the idea about going to Windows Update and doing a Custom search
with no results.
2. I am not running SUS or WSUS or even WUS as far as I know, and none of
these things show up in services.
3. When I run the Msiexec command it tells me "This action is only valid for
products that are currently installed"

GLOBAL RANT! ... I know this is a Beta, but how can you put out a Beta that
won't even install properly?!!! So many people are having trouble installing
this that MICROSOFT should withdraw Windows Defender from distribution until
it at least installs.

Please try this:

After considerable time and effort trying to get Defender to work after
uninstall and reinstall (repeatedly) I finally got it to work. I am posting
my solution so maybe someone else will be able to use it.

Previously it had appeared that the definitions had downloaded, but they
would not update to Defender. Using various suggestions in these forums, I
finally did this:

1. Completely uninstalled Windows Defender
2. Downloaded and ran Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (removing ONLY
Windows Defender definitions - in my case - 1.14.1315.1 - with it)
3. Downloaded and installed Windows Defender, allowing it to check for
definitions
and run a scan.
When it finished, everything was up to date and Windows Defender was
properly installed again. It seems the step I was omitting was to delete
the definitions in the pc before installing Defender. Since the
definitions were already there, Defender was not getting any new definitions
when it checked and no update was occurring. This MAY work for someone -
again it may not, but it's worth a try if you have been unable to update
after a reinstallation. Good Luck.

To Bill Sanderson,
My thanks for the idea and link, it actually worked, although I did not have
the issue with the "error" code most others were receiving after attempting
to download the updates for Microsoft Defender Beta 2, they just would not
download, however your tip on the use of the "Windows Installer Clean Up
Tool" did the trick, I removed "defender", restarted the computer, then used
the Windows Installer Clean Up Tool to remove the existing Defender Signature
Definitions, restarted the computer again, and then downloaded Windows
Defender Beta 2, did the full install allowing it to download the definitions
and engine upgrade file, and it worked flawlessly, Thank you again for the
tip.

Thanks to all who replied. I followed everyone's suggestions with NO SUCCESS.
As instructed I did the following.
1. Uninstalled Microsoft AntiSpyware
2. Rebooted
3. Run Windows Uninstall Cleanup - which had no reference to Microsoft
AntiSpyware nor Windows Defender nor Defender Signatures
4. did the Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} which came back
to say "This action is only valid for products which are currently installed."
5. I downloaded a new Windows Defender dated 2/23/2006 and installed it.
6. I clicked on check for updates and run quick install.

Same error. Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80070643
BTW. The Windows Defender screen said "signature version: 1.0.0.0"

MICROSOFT -- Please withdraw this software until it really works!

Please check to see that the Event Log is running on Startup. Go to
Start, Run, type in

services.msc

Click OK
Scroll down to Event Log, double click it, in the Startup type window
set it to Automatic, click Apply, OK, close the Services console.

Are is the system having any issues when doing Windows Updates or is
this just limited to updating WD ?

Glad that worked--normally, I would recommend using the resolution steps in
KB 915105 first--but the removal tool should work, and the uninstall, etc,
should not be needed.

I certainly didn't ask you to uninstall Windows Defender.

Please try step 4 followed by a visit to Windows Update to get new
definitions.

If you get an error message in step 4, try step 3, followed by that same
visit to Windows Update.

I know of no problem with Windows Defender for which uninstalling is the
best fix, and I don't recommend it--if you read KB article 915105, it
actually complicates the issue with regards to update problems.

When you ran Windows Installer Cleanup, did you get to the small screen
labeled Windows Installer Cleanup, which lists your installed programs? I
tried to run it once and failed to get that far, so I didn't go far enough.
Once you get to the installed programs, it is near the bottom - you should
see "Windows Defender Signatures. This is a scroll down menu. Actually
Windows Installer Cleanup installs as a program on your pc - click Start>All
Programs>Windows Installer Cleanup and the box with all the programs should
appear. DON'T remove any but the Windows Defender Signatures. It worked
for me!

Yes. The windows installer cleanup did get to the screen listing products to
clean up.
No. There were no references anywhere to either Windows Defender nor
Defender Signatures nor Microsoft AntiSpyware nor any variation of same.

I'm a little confused - did you run Windows Install Cleanup AFTER you
reinstalled Defender? If not - and you still have Defender installed now -
you might look there again to see what the Windows Defender Signatures is
showing. If it is showing anything other than 1.20.1325.6, I believe you
should delete it and then try update using Windows Update. I believe this
would clear out any old Signatures and make place for the new Windows Update
Defender Signatures now out. Does that make any sense to anyone?

I am curious why we see the following in the WU log:

2006-03-16 11:48:35 1096 a0c Agent * WSUS server: <NULL>
2006-03-16 11:48:35 1096 a0c Agent * WSUS status server: <NULL>

Can you verify that policy or the registry does not have a WSUS Server (with
no name) enabled.

Thanks to everyone who replied: plun, JohnBurns, Bill Sanderson,
bill_is_here, Steve Wechsler, Steve Dodson

I finally had success !
The problem was quite obscure.

The Application Event Log had the following entry:
Source: MsiInstaller, Event ID: 11327, User: NT Authority\SYSTEM, Error
Product: Windows Defender Signatures -- Error 1327.Invalid Drive: y:\

The Y: drive holds "My Documents" and my Outlook.pst files. This is a mapped
drive on our server which has automatic backups.

So I figured, let me try to install it from an administrator account which
does not have any mapped drives. Unfortunately same error! So now I'm really
mad, and decide to go nuclear.

I pull out my trusty Registry Cleaner and find some references to the Y:
drive even for this other user. Kaboom! Blasted those entries clear to Mars.

Now it installs like a kitten and updates and we're all good to go.

Thanks again.

Excellent! Thanks for taking the effort and digging.

I would say that this sounds like a bug, but I'll leave that to Steve Dodson
to look into.

I've seen several other posts with similar errors, and not had success with
the "usual" workarounds.
