Update error 0x80070643 - fatal error during installation

G

Guest

Although Defender appears to install correctly I am unable to update due to
the above error.
I have tried the "Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}" fix and
get "This action is only valid for products that have been installed".
Re-installing defender makes no difference.
Can anyone help?

Hello Graham,

Are you running engine 1.1.1347.0, some users find a relif with that one.

Version 1.1.1347.0 can be installed on top of 1.1.1051.0.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...e7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&DisplayLang=en

Before you apply 1347, Can you go to Windows Update, do an Express scan,
and apply all offered updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com
Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature
update with windows defender will fail until you have these files.

I hope this post is helpful.
Let us know how it works ºut.

I was running
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1185.0
Signature Version: 1.0.0.0

and have now installed
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1303.0
Definition Version: 1.0.0.0

I already had installed all windows update updates.
There is no chamge in the error - I am still unable to install new
definitions. (Windows update has never offered ANY updates for defender).

I;m trying to figure out the error message.

Can you provide info. about your OS, anti-virus, firewall, etc. etc.

You said, you are able to get updates for your OS, but no for WD?

Can you said from where you get the installation for WD?

Thank you

G

Guest

OS is XP pro SP2 with all updates applied.
Firewall is Zonealarm (latest free version)
Antivirus is AVG 7 (free)

WD was downloaded from MS download site direct (both old and new versions)

Windows update acts as if WD is not installed - ie I don't see WD updates
but do see and can install everything else.

Had a look in event viewer and saw -
Product: Windows Defender Signatures -- Error 1606. Could not access network
location %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures\.

Could be significant - but why does the update need to access this folder?
My 'My Documents' (and it's subfolders) are not in the default location but
do exist and can be accessed by everything else normally.

Thanks for the continuing help,

I've now completed all the suggestions - the result is no different, still
can't update definitions. Any more ideas?

Graham--let's try one, or perhaps two things more:

1) Use the windows installer cleanup tool. Engel referenced this, so I
assume that you've downloaded it and installed it?

Once you've installed it, go to start, all programs, and run the tool.

Scroll down to "Windows Defender signatures" and hightlight that and hit
remove.

Then try:

2) Start, control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender, "click
here for support info", and choose Repair.

Follow this by a trip to Windows Update, doing an Express scan.

In theory, I don't know why what you've done already is any different than
my suggestions, but they're what has worked for me.

Hello Bill,

The user mention error 1606, and this is what I find:

You receive an "Error 1606" error message when you try to install or remove
a Microsoft program
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886549

but I don't know how can be apply in this case.

Probably with your infinite knowleg, you can make heads and tails of this.
:)

Happy Eastern to you and Graham.

Thanks - I remembered thinking that I should look that up, but didn't take
the time to check it out.

That article may well be relevant, but its the kind of resource I don't much
like using. I think I've used it maybe once in these groups--fortunately
with someone who could follow it sensibly and carefully.

To my mind, since the procedure if you find a variation from the default is
to remove the "bad" key and replace it, I'd sure rather they just provided a
button to push and set ALL of those keys back to the defaults. It wouldn't
surprise me if some enterprising soul has done that.

So--I don't know if my solution will work for Graham, or if there's
something deeper wrong, and using this KB article will be needed.

Bill, I tried your suggestion first but it didn't help.

I then had a look at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886549 and found
that the key for 'My Pictures' did not exist at all. I tried creating this
key with a value pointing to the real location of 'My Pictures' on this
system and that has not helped either.
If you think it may help I can set it to the default value and create a 'My
pictures' folder in the default location but I've not tried that yet.

Thanks for the help,

Oh, forgot to mention in the last post that the Windows installer cleanup
entry for "Windows Defender Signatures" does not exist, though there is one
for "Windows Defender".

Can you enable Windows Installer Logging
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=223300 ), reproduce the error and then
send me the WI Log? Then, can you export and send me the system event log?

Can you enable Windows Installer Logging
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=223300 ), reproduce the error and then
send me the WI Log? Then, can you export and send me the system event log?
