Hi I have Defender update problems keep getting error code 0x80070663.
Running Windows XP home edition on a Dell 8200.

Defender was working ok until recently.

Have run Windows Live Safety Center checks and cleaned registry

Have tried KB 915105
Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
Returns the package could not be opened etc.

Have checked and added registery values as shown in KB 913754

All to no effect, have run out of suggestions from web searched and thoughts.

Thanks John

Thanks- that's an article I hadn't seen before, and I can see why you looked
at it.

Can you check, via Windows Update, and an express scan, whether you are
missing any critical updates--in particular, I think there may have been one
to the Installer 3.1?

Hmm--can't tell--if I turn on "show Updates" none is listed under installer
3.1.

The omnibus troubleshooting doc is now:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918355

but I'm not sure there's anything in there that you have not tried
yet--hmm--probably the troubleshoot Windows Update doc has stuff in it you
haven't tried yet, because it has a TON of stuff in it.

I think that's the route I'd take--if the Microsoft troubleshooting doc for
WindowsUpdate seems daunting, check out, via google "djlizard dial a fix" as
a search term.

Hi
Just returned to the probelm installed the latest updates first
Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

then Definition Update 1.14.1464.7 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597) and
this time it was accepted.

Could have been a validation problem or the Defender update method has
changed.

Thanks
John

They have made changes to the update mechanism. I believe the WGA thing is
not related, but can't say for sure.
