Help - "Windows defender definitions have not been updated"

Guest

1. I tried this - did not work

Start>run>Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

Answer yes to the window that asks "Do you really want to delete this
file?". Check for updates and Defender should update to the latest
definition file.

2. reinstalled the product - did not work........

PLS. Help

Can you go out and visit http://www.windowsupdate.com then download/install
all the required files? If you are running into errors there, let us know if
you need further assistance.

Hi Steve

It´s a "damned mess" with Windowsupdate..........

Fixed 2 PCs today with stucked update.

1. update.microsoft.com

1. WGA install, seems to be OK.

2. Windowsupdate notifys that files are missing, repair process NOT ok.

3. Changed settings within IE > Tools, almost ALL users haven´t set
their security levels to default , it´s a bug IMHO, or is MS scared to
set them to default level ????

4. Added update.microsoft.com to "Trusted Sites".

5. Manual Windowsupdate again and now it works.........

6. WDs update also works

:)

In my experience IE is NEVER set to default after an install or upgrade. I
can recall bugging this in a previous beta--I'm quite sure that Microsoft is
aware of the issue and that the reasoning behind it is done with care--but I
don't know what it is. So--one of the things I do when I touch a machine
for the first time is set all that stuff back to defaults.

I have seen one oddity for the first time, yesterday--one WSUS user needed
to check off TLS 1.0 to get WindowsUpdate (and thus WSUS) to work. I did
find a KB which may have indicated why--but that was a new one for me.

"stuck" machines that I've worked with directly are always completely up to
date with Windows Update, and autoupdate is working on them.

Hi

It must be better IMHO to just set default security level for
everything. Within a corporate network they then controls it with GPOs
so whats the problem ????

I have noticed that for example F-Secure 2006 overrides and blocks all
user settings and all security level control is handled from F-Secure
2006.

The tactic I used worked directly on these 2 PCs.

Windowsupdate had been blocked since January within those PCs.

The only way I can get Windows defender def updates is...go to cmd prompt
type "msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} hit enter and "yes"
to remove file. THEN open Windows defender, check updates and I get the
latest def updates. Do not reinstall Windows Defender. I have tried
everything else that has been posted in the newsgroup, but this is the ONLY
method that works for me. Just trying to help....I sure wish MS would fix
this someday!
