Unable to complete update

I'm not able to update Windows Defender... for the past several updates I've
used the procedure from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

Now, when I run the command given there, I get the following error:

Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from file
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\AS_Sigs.MSI

When I open Windows Defender, it says my definitions version 1.0.0.0 from
1/25/2006.

If I try to update from within Defender, I get the error:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80070643. Fatal error
during installation.


I've also tried updating via Windows Update and that doesn't work either...

I've also tried uninstalling and re-installing, oh about 15 times and no luck.

Any ideas?

Engel, thanks for the response.

But, unfortunately, I've already followed all of the procedures outlined in
the new KB with no luck.
