Hi,

I have just installed Windows Defender on my PC at work and I tried to
update the definition files but I get the following message:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8024002a.

Please can someone help with resolving this.

Same issue here. rebooted, disabled firewall, etc... still nothing...
slightly stumped but still tinkering.

Think I got it.... pretty sure it was connecting to
windowsupdate.microsoft.com and telling it to proceed. It then downloaded 2
things prior to telling me what I was missing.

Windows Installer 3.1
and some patch KB898461

When I rebooted it patched.

There was ONE other thing I did and that was to remove my wireless card and
hook to a land line CAT5 cable... but I doubt that was it.

Going to WindowsUpdate should get you updates. If you can't get updates at
WindowsUpdate, that's what needs fixing.

I had the exact same sort of message.

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80070427. The service
cannot be started; either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled
defices associated with it."

I haven't found a solution yet. I've tried re-installing/re-downloading.
Nothing yet. I also checked and the service isn't disabled. Seems like
there are some problems with the beta. Beta 1 worked great. I never had
problems with it.

You might do a search of these groups on that precise error number. There
are several causes to update failures, and you may find a solution if you
can find other threads referencing the same error message. I hope to get
some time this weekend to systematically make a table of these errors and
any known fixes.
