Defender Won't Install Updates

My new installation of Beta 2, warns "Windows Defender definitions haven't
been updated in 54 days."

Clicking "Check for Updates" causes the button to gray out, but no update is
done. Same for the button in Help/About. In all cases, the button grays out
and remains that way, no other messages appear.

Following advice here in the forum, I've tried: deleting the signature msi
file; following the steps in KB 915105; uninstalling and reinstalling
Defender.

None of this has had any effect.

Win XP Pro
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1185.0
Signature Version: 1.0.0.0

Having exact problem . If run Microsoft updates it installs Defender updates
and shows as "successful" and almost immediately defender comes up with
update required etc. I have uninstalled it twice before because it becomes a
nuisance being reminded to update and repeatedly fails inspite of showing
successful

You're welcome--no promises--some folks do see this repeatedly, others only
a one-off.

I have reinstalled the program and the error message I recieve follows:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8007064c. The
installation source for this product is not availanble. Verify that the
source exists and that you can access it.

I have used the file WindowsDefender.msi to install this program.

Here's where I'd go from that info:

1) It never hurts to try Windows Update--express scan, install everything
found.

2) If that does not succeed:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

download and install Windows Installer cleanup tool.

Run from start, all programs. Highlight\

Windows defender signatures

and choose remove.

Then go to Windows Update and do an express scan and apply all offered
updates.

Good luck. I don't know what work is necessary to fix this issue--we've
heard there are some bugs which require revs to the UI code, and haven't
seen such a revision--but I have no idea, about the updates--i.e. what the
real fix would be.

I have followed the steps that you have outlined here. There was nothing to
be done at Windows Update or by using the cleanup tool. I then reinstalled
Windows Defender. The program installed, updated and ran a quick scan
without a problem. The update warning is nowhere to be seen. Everything
seems to be as it should be. Beats me as to what changed.

Thank you for your assistance with this problem.

It's probable that somewhere in that recipe, if we'd done a repair
install--add remove programs, Windows Defender, change, update--that might
have done the trick--without the full uninstall/reinstall. Alls well that
ends well, though--glad you got it fixed.
