Whenever I open a folder and scroll down the list the explorer crashes. What
could be causing this anomaly? Is there a fix for this?

Thanks,
B.

Look for an Error Report in Event Viewer and post a copy.

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A
workaround is copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off
the copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.

Here is the error comments in the event viewer:

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x000106c3.

Would please either copy / paste the Error Report or confirm the Event
ID and Source.

There are a number of potential causes.

Have you run a full anti-virus scan with updated definitions? The nimda
virus can cause this problem.

What anti-spyware measures are you routinely taking?

Try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes and hit Enter.

I do not have an anti-virus. I had one but it slowed down my system so I
took it off.
What anti-spyware measures are you routinely taking?
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

I run the MSAntiSpyware Beta2
Try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes and hit Enter.

I just did. I hope it fixed it.

You really should have an anti-virus programme. AVG is highly respected
and will not create performance issues:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

You need to run an anti-virus with updated definitions to start
eliminating potential causes of the crash,

Please let us know how you get on.

Apparently the SFC did not find anything. I will go ahead and get that
antivirus app. I will let you know...

So I ran AVG but did not find anything. So it is safe to assume that my
system is virus-free (?). Do the Microsoft people monitor this NG at all?
Gerry, I know you are trying your hardest in resolving this problem and I
appreciate it. If you or anyone out there have anymore ideas please let me
know.

Just to let you know, that this problem is not critical at this point but
what I am afraid of is my system eventually crushing.

Have you recently started using a digital camera in conjunction with
your computer?

I would not say your computer is free of spyware but it would require
some effort to totally clean your computer. I can post some further
instructions if you would like to try.

No. I used this computer solely for software development.

Any ideas are welcome. I'll keep trying.
