Wandering default printers

The default printer will wander around among the several
printers installed on this machine. The local printer is
set as default but the system often wanders to other
network printers. What causes this and how can it be
stopped?

Is the default on a USB port? If so, is the USB port set to go into standby
after not being used for a while? Have you tried disabling this feature
(Device Manager, right click on each USB port and uncheck the option in the
Power Management tab)?
