I have a bizzarre problem and can find no reference to it anywhere.
When I open device manager (eg from the Control Panel), the usual
window comes up and the device list appears as normal, but immediately
it gets down as far as "Universal Serial Bus Controllers", the list
disappears (apart from the root system icon at the top), and the
hourglass appears. The window freezes like this for about 5 seconds
and repeats. If I'm quick, I can get the utility to respond while the
list is being written to the screen.
It looks like it's doing a kind of automatic refresh, but I can't find
out why.
This is driving me bonkers - any suggestions, relevant url's
gratefully received.

A few possibilities:

-- Flaky hardware.

-- Bad or obsolete device driver. Make sure your drivers are
up to date, especially for your USB controller, and especially if
you're using a wacky non-Intel chipset (e.g. VIA).

First, you should check that there are no devices that could be causing this
problem (even a faulty monitor, keyboard, floppy drive, etc or mouse).
Everything connected properly?, drivers updated?, etc. Additionally, try to
access the device manager another way and see what happens: from the
Computer Management console (Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer
Management, then select Device Manager on the right) . Try this stuff and is
the problem still happening?
