Very Slow Boot

Hi,
I have a HP computer with 1 GB Ram, 12GB HD and 3.2GHZ CPU running Windows
XP Home. When I boot the system I get the HP bios screen like normal, then
the first load screen for XP. The screen goes blank then after about 10
minutes the boot process continues to the point where the desktop backgroup
pictures shows and then stalls again for several minutes. Eventually all the
icons appear and the machine seems to run normally after that. Any ideas?

I updated my Norton Antivirus, nothing found
I ran several spyware programs (SpyBot, Adaware, SBC Spyware, Annonomizer
Spyware program.) Nothing found?

Thanks, -Todd

Sorry.. Yes it is 120GB HD. I also did a defrag and that didn't help. I
have about 30GB free.

Then perhaps CTRL-ALT-DEL and start Task manager, and see if anything
running 100%. Or you may have some software you installed trying to
retrieve an update across the internet?

When the machine finally diplays the background picture I can see the task
manager. The "System Idel Process" is usually at 99% with taskmgr.exe going
to 5 or 10% on occasion. Nothing is using the CPU and the HD drive light is
not on either. I have not installed any new software except for a java
script upgrade, but I backed that out and the problem still exists.

Any other ideas?
Thanks, -Todd

I seem to be "evolving" faster than the hardware ... I can't keep up with it
anymore !! LOL

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Look in Event Viewer at the System and Application logs for Warning or
Error report and post a copy here You can access Event Viewer by
selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Any Norton or McAfee products?

Hope this helps.

Gerry

Do some clean boot troubleshooting. Could be a service that is hanging
things up.
