Slow windows boot

Hi,

I am using a HP 1000dv laptop (windows xp, 1G RAM, which worked fine
untile a couple of weeks ago). However, since the past couple of weeks
the boot time is really slow...around 4 mins.
Before I see the windows xp screen, I see a blank screen with a
progress bar at the bottom...and this is where it takes the maximum
time. The progress bar moves rather slowly.

I have run defrag, checked for viruses and spyware. Even reinstalled
windows xp but the problem would not go away.

However, after booting up, the system runs perfectly fine.

Any suggestions on this will be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Ranganath

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message.
This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with
links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event
Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. What is the Total,
the Commit Charge and the Peak?

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

Any McAfee or Norton products installed. Any software
changes / updates shortly before the problem started?

Hope this helps.

Initial expectation is that your HDD may not putting data on the data
cable fast enough. I had an older system (back when Win98 was "the
latest OS"), that after a couple of power problems couldn't even keep up
with a 1x speed CD burn (150KB/sec).

I'm not saying this is the problem, but it sounds similar to what I've
already experienced, so I thought I'd chip in.
