Since some time I have booting problems with my XP PC. At first it seems to
boot normally, I get the XP logo, then the screen becomes black with only
the mouse pointer. Then... nothing happens anymore. Any ideas?

Something like that happened to an XP netbook I have last month,
it turned out that it had set the harddisk to PIO mode,
and that it needs a registry fix to have it go to ultra-DMA
mode. I found all the information needed to fix it at
'DMA reverts to PIO | Windows Problem Solver': http://winhlp.com/node/10

OK, I checked the IDE Port settings of the hard disks in Windows manually
and they were "ultra DMA mode 5".
And the strange thing is that the mentioned stalling doesn't always occur.
Today it didn't...
