I bought copies of XP pro to upgrade from XP home. The validation process
fails with the following info:

OS Version: Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2
Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
Model: Dimension 9100
PID: 55274-640-5678637-23389

Reasons this PC Failed
Validation Failure: Invalid Product Key
The product key associated with your copy of Windows was never issued by
Microsoft.
The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple
computers.

Any Ideas?

Validation is known to be extremely flawed. It really isn't needed for
anything that you need. Ignore it.

Call Dell. They sold you the upgrade, yes?

Assuming you have a Dell computer, contact them.
If you do not have a Dell computer, contact the seller.

While you're waiting for Dell, if you want to get updates, open IE and
click on Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Manage add ons and disable
Windows Genuine Advantage. Close IE so it takes effect. Go back to
Windows Update and download whatever your heart desires.

Where did you buy them from?

Unless you're installing that Dell OEM license on the Dell computer
with which it was originally sold by Dell, then the validation process
is working exactly as it should. An OEM license is valid only on the
original computer.

Further, an OEM CD cannot perform an upgrade.

Did you obtain this license through a less-then-legitimate channel? It
cannot have legally been for sale without the original Dell computer on
which it was first installed and then sold.

True, but it certainly seems to be working correctly in this case, base
upon the OP's description of events.

Insufficient evidence to come to that conclusion.

That is not an OEM PID.

It appears that you have a Dell computer that originally came with XP
Home and that you have purchased your XP Pro upgrades from some other
source.

Did your XP Pro come in a blue Microsoft retail box, with a separate
product key for each copy? If not then you need to contact the
seller of the XP Pro and discuss the matter further with them.

Good luck

Good catch. I understand the "Dell...." portion of the information to
refer to the CD, since a Product ID was included, and wouldn't have been
relevant to the PC, but it must be the computer to which he was
refering, after all.
