When are you receiving this error message? When you're trying to install IE 7, or some other software? The log looks as if your installation is "genuine", but the validation page is having some difficulty in actually deciding that it is?

With a good following wind, it will help us all migrate to more logical
systems rather than Billy Goat's crazy bloated way of doing things. MS
is doing it's best to put users off Windoze. Have you seen how many
folks' systems have been screwed by the IE6 updates recently?

I receive this error when I try to run windows update, then "Express"
install, windows asked for validation and then I get the error.

Try using Custom install, and see what component(s) its trying to download first.

I would also concider talking to dell's people about this because i know it
was a problem on the old 5150 laptops runnig P4s where an update was
incompatible

Also when you reinstalled windows make sure you used the cd that came with
your system and not some retail version because the cd that they give you has
specific drivers for your system

Does it ever occur to the MVPs that the recent Windows Advantage etc. has
created a Titanic....and you are the ensigns?

I have used MS for 22 years...I am really considering jumping ship.

They are just MVP's, living to their own credo of being helpful
specifically to users of Microsoft products and generally, computing.
They are not Microsoft employees but there are enough of them, the
peer group, to grant recognition to a significant number of their
fellow travelers, the peerage. Hence, the title of MVP. They could
be helpful in shaping Microsoft's policies and direction but most
prefer the sand in the beach they are on in which to stick their
heads. So, let's just enjoy the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Hi Carey
What is this link you gave - I get a 'run, save, cancel' download window - no
explanation as to what I am to download.
I have looked at the kb number, but reading the info I am none the wiser I
am afraid.

Carey expects everyone to trust him so he posts the direct download
instead of the web site from whence it came. Common decency and
net-etiquette would dictate that he post the site where it can be
downloaded instead of a direct download. I remember a certain PCButts1
who was banned from these forums for doing the exact same thing but he
wasn't a teacher's pet like Carey.

Thanks but this made no difference. I still get the same validation error
and by the way "yes" I did use the original Dell disk provided. Since this
Dell just went out of warrenty I'm not paying Dell for help. Has anyone at
MS thought that it could be a problem they caused? I understand the worry
about bad copies of Windows, but this validation seems to cause big problems
for us legal owners. In fact my other computer which has a legal copy of Win
XP keep failing when it tries to download Genuine Advantage Notification
KB905474. It can't be random that people are having this much trouble all at
once.

Any more ideas or do I have to switch to MAC OS since MS says I can't have
anymore updates for software I paid for?

MS allegedly will have a fix for the fix for the fix on Tuesday. We are
being forced to be beta testers for WGA all in the name of Justice and
Liberty for All.
