I bought my Dell Optiplex GX280 w./ XP Professional. Don't understand why I
am getting this error message about not having Genuine Microsoft installed.
What do I do?

It seems as if the XP installation you have was installed with a pirated
Volume License Key that was so flagrantly spread around that Microsoft
blocked it by actual key number.

You can:
* Shoot the sumbitch that sold you stolen software. While this may prove
satisfying on some level, it won't get your machine to work.
* Buy a legitimate license from Microsoft. If I recall, in your case, it'll
be about $90.00.

Did you get it straight from Dell, or from a small computer shop
or online seller claiming to be a Dell Dealer?

If it's straight from Dell then there should be a Windows XP Pro COA
somewhere on the machine with a valid regcode.

Sometimes in these situations, the license is for XP *Home* (and that is
indeed what it says on the COA sticker) but someone at some point
decided to upgrade to a now-banned VLK of Windows XP Pro.

To Annie, what does it say on your COA: XP Home or XP Pro? Do you have a
Dell XP Reinstallation CD? What version of XP is it for: Home or Pro?
And if you have this CD, use Windows explorer to drill drown to:

I386\winnt.sif

and open it up with Notepad. The key should normally match what you
included in your first post:

Windows Product Key: *****-*****-3R89F-D2KXW-VPK3J

But I'll bet it won't since I am sure you didn't purchase a volume
license!
