Genuine Validation Problem

I just went to do a Windows Update and got the Genuine Windows Validation
page. It says that the product key failed validation. The only problem is
that I've already been validated a while back and have used update many
times. All of a sudden it says the product key has failed. Any ideas why I'm
suddenly not validated?
I'm using XP-Professional (5.1.2600) Service Pack 2

Thank you,
Joe

Volume licence key? It just asks if I want to validate and then that the
"Product Key Failed Validation". Then it gives several reasons why it might
have failed. That's it. It's very strange why my key suddenly stopped being
good. I'm not extremely computer savvy, so please let me know if there's more
info I should be including with this msg.

Validation is known to be very flawed. Ignore it. Microsoft seems to
be ignoring it.

Here's what shows up on the failed validation page:

"Why did my machine fail validation?
There are several reasons why a product key may not be valid.

The product key associated with your copy of Windows was not issued by
Microsoft. The key detected on your system is counterfeit and was most likely
generated by a non-sanctioned key generator. If Windows came pre-installed on
your computer, please see the steps you can take below.

The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple
computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one machine unless
otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement.

Counterfeiters have been known to sell computers with Windows installed
using the same product key to unsuspecting consumers. If you suspect this
happened to you, please see the steps you can take below.

If you have used this product key on more than one computer, you will need
to purchase a new product key. Each computer must have its own unique product
key."

But I can't download the updates without validation. Can I? So confused!!

Yes, you can. Open IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Manage Add ons.
Disable Windows Genuine Advantage. Close IE for it to take effect. Go
back to Windows Update and ignore the bubble that comes up to tell you
that you've done what you've done and download to your heart's content.

im sorry but you have an invalid licence key installed on the machine, what
updates are you tring to download, is it just critical ones, or are you after
something else, i had the same problem, i managed to get around it and byapss
the validation but when i downloaded photostory and then tried to run it the
message came back saying my key was invalid!!! so i had to uninstall it, but
i can get critical updates, let me know if its just the critical ones you are
after?? pete

Thanks, Pete. I actually just read the reply by Alias and disabled
Validation. What I really don't understand is how I can be "validated" one
day and getting updates no problem and then the next day it says my key is no
good? It's very strange! Anyway, it was mainly the critical updates I didn't
want to miss, so all is okay now.

Validation is flawed. Failing validation is as much proof that God
exists, as it proves an invalid license key.

Did you try this the next day? Sometime Microsoft servers can go
down. You can always use bix fix. It will always download what you
need. (If you know how to use it. It will show you the direct
download location) .

Microsoft has a new validation check that installs the activeX and
blocks it from beinfg disabled, giving you the message that it's
managed by the system administrator.
Even if you are logged in as Administrator you get the same result.

it seems that "administrator" is not what it says ...it appears to be
just a superuser. How do you logon to the system as the REAL
Administrator.

Well, now we know why there's a new version of WGA.

Greetz fly out to all those that "you know what" about "you know
who"...LMAO.

Anyway...I got this message and, like you guys, didn't like it...It
said something along the lines of:

"This add-on is managed by your administrator"

We don't like this we can't change it right? ... WRONG! I know the
solution which you seek and have outlined it as follows:

The reason this happens is when the particular add-on is restricted via
the Group Policy Editor or via the registry. In this case it's in the
registry. Get ready to get your hands dirty 'cause here we go.

1. Goto the start menu and click 'run'

2. Type 'regedit' in the dialog box.

3. Goto the edit menu and select Find

4. Do a search for 'Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool'

5. The first result should return a key containing a (default) data
variable and an AppID data variable.

Make a note of this key that contains these two data types.(note:
ignore the value of the AppID...it's not what we want!)

6. Now browse to the following location in the registry:

HKLM \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ policies \ EXT
\ CLSID

7. now look for the data variable with the same name as that key you
just wrote down.

8. Delete it and now you can manage your Windows Genuine Advantage
addon...(By this I mean disable it.)

9. Now...Open Windows Update.

10. Select which way you want to go (either custom or express) it
doesn't matter at this point.

11. You will be asked to reinstall the Validation tool. DON'T DO IT!
Instead...put the registry data variable string that you deleted back
in with a value of 1

12. Click back and then click the update method of choice and voila!

Once I did this everything worked and I was able to get my updates.

If this was any help just leave one. :)

CHEERS!

Thanks for the information. I tried changing the value to 0 before
entering
Windows update and then changing it back to 1 per instructions in item
11. I didn't have to mess with the data variable string. It works.

Have a good day !!!
