Using games in XP

Whenever I install any game in Windows XP pro it lets me play it once but after I turn off my computer and try to start it again nothing happens. Sometimes the mouse will turn into an hourglass for a second but nothing happens. The same thing happens with another computer I have. I built both of them and installed Windows XP pro on each but all of the games I have do this. Should I have turned something on in windows or something? I also have directx9 on both systems. I can't figure out whats wrong.

Are you running anti-virus software or a third-party firewall when you're
attempting to play? You might try shutting those down completely before
playing. With Symantec (Norton) or ZoneAlarm, you need to make sure those
are totally shut down (an exit from the Systray icon doesn't kill them) or
programmed properly to allow other program usage.
