USB to Parallel Challenge

Guest

I have a Dell with No parallel port, but 4 USB ports. I have an HP950C. I
bought a cable to go from USB to Parallel. I thought I followed the
directions to install the software correctly but twice did it and it's not
working. I went to the HP website to search for help there and it only has
help for Windows 2000, not XP. When I was given the option to choose a port,
I chose USB, but the HP950C is not a Plug and Play printer (as far as I know
it's pretty dumb) so I'm at a bit of a loss. Thank you for your help. I did
a search on this board and didn't see this question posted anywhere.

You'll need to purchase a PCI to Parallel Port Controller Card
and install it.

Example:

I like the Belkin F5U002 USB Parallel Adapter cable as this has worked with
many printers. You must contact HP and confirm that the HP 950C supports
this type of connectivity. There are some printers that cannot be connected
in this manner.

Be sure to disable Bidirectional in the ports tab before completely giving
up.

the Belkin cable works for the HP 952C (same printer, different packaging).
I let PnP install the inbox driver.

Thank you all for your help. Alan - please just elaborate a bit on "I let
PnP install the inbox driver."

Alan - you suggest just a cable and Carey - you suggest a piece of hardware
being replaced in my computer. Of course I'm more inclined to get just the
cable, unless I need the new controller card AND the cable?

He connected the printer to the PC and XP did the rest of the work by
itself... it detected the printer and installed the driver that comes with
XP.

Some usb to parallel cables have a software disk that come with them. This
contains the driver that the vender supplies. If your cable has a disk, you
will need to uninstall the current driver and use the disk when you
reinstall. In this case, the cable will probably install as an LPT port and
not a USBxxx port.

I bought a F5U002 USB Parallel Printer Adapter and followed directions to
connect to my HP OfficeJet Pro 1150C to my HP lap top. Unfortunately,
nothing is printing. The printer light keeps blinking, attempting to print
but nothing. What can I do to get my printer to print. The installation
went well according to directions. Thank you. HELP
