Upgrade to Win XP HE

I purchased the upgrade to Win XP HE. When installing the upgrade do I
have to have a CD for a previous version of Windows? I am upgrading from Win
98 SE.

You only need the 98 CD if you are doing a format of the hard drive during
the upgrade. If the upgrade can not find several files in a previous hard
drive installed version of Windows (98, ME, 2000), then it will ask for the
original Windows CD. This is to check to see if tyou qualify for the
upgrade.

Be warned: A computer recovery CD does not work with the upgrade CD. The
recovery CD is not a true Windows installation CD.

If you upgrade over the top of 98SE, no. If you do a clean
installation, yes.

However note that even if you do an upgrade, there is always the
possibility that at some time in the future, you will want to or
have to do a clean reinstallation. The need for this doesn't
happen often, but it can occur. Without a previous qualifying
version's CD, you won't be able to do this.
