Qualifying for Win XP Upgrade

H

Howard Kaikow

It is my understanding that Win 98 qualifies for an upgrade to Win XP Pro.

I have a no longer used Win 98 OEM CD. which cannot be installed on new
hardware.

Can I use that to install Win XP Pro retail Upgrade on new hardware?

No: you have been misinformed.

No: WinXP code is not on the Win98 CD. (It was not released until some
years after 1998. Win98 cannot read NTFS, default for WinXP.)

Yes. The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a previous
qualifying version's installation CD, not to have it installed. When
setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version installed, it will
prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the
previous version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds
quite normally and quite legitimately.

Um, the misinformed one is you.

You misunderstood. Howard wants to use the Win98 CD as a qualifying
product for the XP upgrade.

Here's the list of OS that qualify to upgrade to XP Pro, this list comes
from the side of my XP Pro retail upgrade box :

Windows 98
Windows 98 second edition
Windows Millenium edition
Windows NT Workstation 4.0
Windows 2000 Professional
Windows XP Home

The upgrade CD can be used to do a clean install as long as you insert
the qualifying OS install CD when the XP Pro install process ask for a
proof of ownership of a previous OS.

I used w95 CD as a qualifying CD for clean install of XP home update
CD.

It should be also be noted that although Windows 95 is not on the
list, it *can* be used as proof of ownership of a previous version
when doing a clean installation of XP with the Upgrade CD. However you
can not do a direct upgrade of Windows 95 to XP.

There may, or may not, be a problem in that it's an OEM version. Otherwise,
an W98 CD will work.

Do note, that you do NOT have to the qualifying CD, you merely remove the
XP install CD and insert the qualifying CD when asked, and then remove it
and put the XP CD back in when told to.

My Win 95 CD is an upgrade CD.
doubt if that would work for installing XP Pro.

There's a sure fired way to find out, use it first. If it doesn't work,
use 98.

Mine did, but it was a few years ago. Ask about it at MS. This is not
MS here; just volunteers.

Been a long time, but as I recall that wasn't an issue for the XP
sniffer, worked just fine.
