Unable to standby

I've just re-installed xp on a new hard drive from the recreate disk and then
have run all of the windows updates building back my computer. But the
standby mode is missing and I'm not sure why. Now my laptop will not spin
down and go into sleep mode.

In the settings it does not give me an option for what to do when the lid is
closed other than do nothing. So the computer just stays on when not in use
until the battery runs out, or I have to shut down every time I'm not using
it.

It didn't do this before but suddenly the option is missing. When I hit
start, then turn off computer .. there standby button is shaded and not
available, only shut down and restart

Have you also re-installed all the drivers for each of your devices
(specifically for your graphics card)? If not, installing the correct driver
should allow you to put your computer into standby. In addition you will have
to enable Hibernation (it is disabled by default after a fresh install of XP).
